I love the woods in the morning. Today was no different!
A very large flush of chicken of the woods mushrooms on a hardwood log. They appear to be bright orange and yellow waves outside the bark. There hasn’t been any rain for weeks yet here they are. A small flush of hen of the woods mushrooms at the base of an oak tree. White bane berry aka Doll’s Eyes are white berries with black irises on a central stem that is dark red. All of the foliage is dead and only the stalk remains. Another flush of chicken of the woods mushrooms on a tall hardwood stump . These look like pale pancakes from the side since they are older and dried. It was the first thing I saw even before hitting the trail!

The surprises are some of my favorite moments.

Incantations make it toast more thoroughly without burning. Try it.

"Bread so doughy
Toasting slowly
Crisp and brown
Don't turn down...the heat"

It's interpretative.

I’m making koji rice right now to start a mushroom amino paste. I had a good year gathering wild mushrooms and have a bunch frozen for this project.

It’s pretty barren right now. We haven’t had decent rain for over a month. I’ve been catching some boletes near a soccer field that the irrigation (over) sprays a line of eight pines.
Good hunting!

Quick, where’s the pigpoopballs.jpg?

It could be a number of things. What did the previous incarnation look like? This perhaps?

My daughter manages at a family owned pizzeria and they use it for both sweet and savory pies. It’s very good.

Little airplane bottles of ranch dressing

Spread on toast or in a pb sando typically, but dipping deep fried biscuits in it is a cheat code to bliss.
Now I’m thinking about marbling it into coffee cake 🤔

On the side, so one squeeze bottle per place setting.

That’s crazy; I’m reading a history of adhesives. I can’t put it down.

Bummer -- the book I'm reading is the fascinating story of a prosthetic hand. It's a real page turner!

I started reading a book about encryption, but it was really hard to get into.

Even the tough inner potions can be dried and ground into powder. It’s great flavor for savory dishes. I work it right into rubs for meat and veg alike.

I downloaded and checked it out. Nice work! I’d love to explore Central Europe…..

Maybe a young Dyer’s polypore since it’s near conifers? 🤷

Starting a new succulent collection is very exciting! I lost about half of mine to mealy bugs after a summer outside. 😢

It’s that time again. All the plants that got nursed outdoors or just healthy from the season now don’t fit in their old locations. Btw, I have the plant stand to the right currently and the one to the left of the mantle I had as a rolling cart a couple of years ago!

My love affair with fungus/umami started with yeast. As pie crust? I’m swooning! I love squash custard pies!
