Fully repealing the two-child limit on benefits is by far the best way to ensure fewer children are growing up in poverty.

Half measures – from moving to a three-child limit to exempting working families – would all still lead to an increase in child poverty by the end of the decade.

Britain's wealth gaps means that a typical worker would need to save more than a lifetime’s worth of their earnings to become wealthy

It would now take 52 years of typical earnings – £1.3 million in total – to move from the middle to the top of the wealth distribution.

Hannah Aldridge, Senior Research and Policy Analyst at the Resolution Foundation, said:

“The Local Housing Allowance is frozen at private rent levels from September 2023. Rapid rent rises since then have created an alarming affordability gap for almost two million low-income families. Without Government intervention in the Budget, this freeze in support will become a major drag on families’ living standards.

“The long-term freeze in rates is fiscally shortsighted, achieving short-term savings at the cost of a temporary accommodation crisis that is already costing local authorities £2.8 billion a year.

“With the gap between Local Housing Allowance rates and the 30th percentile of rent expected to pass the previous record of 17 per cent next year, and on track to reach 25 per cent by the end of the Parliament, the Government needs to re-link housing support to local rents before the gap does further damage to living standards.”
