I just put an item from my pantry that was virtually a family heirloom in the bin. A brown squeeze bottle with ‘chicory’ on the lid, that I last recall dad using to sweeten coffee on a ski trip. When I was 14. It was a survivor of three-ish house moves, maybe more.

We got our central library back. There's proper pipes down Taranaki street now. No sewage dripping down Cuba street and Lambton Quay. There's a much safer cycle routes between city and airport, and the basin. The buses aren't cancelled every day

What a difference from Wellington three years ago.

Urgh… lumping it with other subjects does diminish it…

I studied History, Classics and Art History in Year 13. All 3 subjects were full of info. And all 3 barely touched the depth you can go into each subject.

Keeping Art History as a separate subject matters!

This week I had a (copy and paste) reply from the Ministry of Ed ‘Curriculum Refresh Team’ re my concerns about Art History being slashed from the curriculum. Do they really expect us to swallow this?

In the refreshed curriculum, Art History knowledge will not be lost, it will be integrated into specialist art subjects, and other subjects such as History and Classical Studies.
This means that students will continue to engage with historical artworks, artists, and cultural movements from both New Zealand and overseas. Within Painting, Design, Photography, and Creative Arts, there will be historical and contextual components so that students learn about art movements and develop critical analysis alongside their practical work.
Other subjects will also provide opportunities to study art in context. For example, Classical Studies includes the historical and visual analysis of Greek and Roman art and architecture, and this will remain available for students who wish to pursue those interests.
It is important to emphasis the integration of Art History into other subjects is not about diminishing its value. The intention is to ensure that students continue to access this learning in ways that are coherent and sustainable, while also supporting schools to offer a wide range of relevant subjects.
For students who want to take their interest further, Art History remains available as a pathway at tertiary level. Universities continue to provide opportunities for study in this discipline, ensuring that students who are passionate about Art History can pursue it in depth.
This approach reflects the broader commitment of the curriculum refresh. The aim is to deliver a curriculum that is relevant and responsive, while continuing to honour the subjects that enrich our education system and broaden students' understanding of the world. Art History remains part of that vision.
