Sakhr Ahmad Khalil Zghoul, 26, from Husan near Bethlehem, died inside Ofer Prison after being held for more than 6 months without charge or trial under Israel’s administrative detention system. No cause of death was disclosed. His brother is also detained without trial, and Sakhr’s death came days after another detainee from his town also died in custody. At the time the city fell, an estimated 200,000 to 260,000 civilians were residing in El Fasher. WFP now estimates that 70,000 to 100,000 people remain trapped, while those who managed to flee are arriving in Tawila and other areas with little shelter, medicine, or clean water. Satellite imagery and survivor accounts from El Fasher point to mass killings, burned bodies, and abandoned markets across the city. WFP says it has no partners on the ground, no verified reports that community kitchens are operating, and that healthcare, markets, and basic services have been effectively obliterated. The Yale Humanitarian Research Lab has previously suggested a low estimate of 60,000 killed, with as many as 150,000 people unaccounted for. More than 650,000 people are now sheltering in Tawila, a former desert town about 60 kilometers west of El Fasher, overwhelmed by displacement from El Fasher and Zamzam camp. Many families are living in makeshift grass or straw shelters, disease outbreaks including cholera are spreading, and humanitarian assistance is failing to keep pace with the scale of need. WFP says it now has an agreement in principle with the RSF to enter El Fasher for initial assessments and route reconnaissance, noting that only once access is secured will the scale of civilian harm and destruction after more than 18 months of siege begin to become clear.

Ahmed was shot by the second shooter, who was firing from a bridge. He suffered 2 gunshot wounds and is undergoing surgery.

Labour strikes aren’t new!

The first recorded strike in history took place in Egypt some 3,200 years ago!

The ‘Strike Papyrus’ records that tomb workers of King Ramesses III downed tools over pay and conditions circa 1157 BC!

My photo shows the front side (recto) of an ancient Egyptian administrative document written by the scribe Amunnakht in hieratic script (cursive writing of hieroglyphics). It is written in black ink on papyrus by the scribe Amunnakht. The papyrus is now a yellowy-brown colour and is worn in places. The document is known as the ‘Strike Papyrus’ and recounts that in November of Year 29 of the reign of Ramesses III, the royal tomb workers of Deir el-Medina stopped work for the first time and spent several days at the Theban necropolis in the temples of Tuthmosis III and Ramesses II. They demanded that the grain ratians for their work be distributed, and the authorities subsequently disbursed the grain rations. However, a few days later, the workers went on strike again, this time finding refuge in the temple of Seti I. Their refusal to retum to work stemmed fram the precarious working conditions, a situation they wanted to bring directly to the pharaoh. The last strike documented here was in January of the following year.
