Although NorCal flood issues so far have mostly been minor, an exception is near Redding in northern Sac Valley. A narrow but persistent & stationary band of torrential downpours associated w/convergence zone has resulted in significant & still-escalating flash flooding. #CAwx

Sunset color lasted a long time on this the shortest day of the year. Storminess will likely limit sunset opportunities in San Diego County this week. First rains should arrive Tuesday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Northern California has seen some impressive rainfall totals over the last 24 hours. Similar numbers are not out of the question in Southern California later this week. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

San Diego will have 9 hours, 59 minutes and 49 seconds of daylight today, the shortest day of the year. Each day grows longer now until the summer solstice. For now, gains come because the sun sets a little later each day. Sunrises continue to come later until early next year. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Meanwhile, up north ...
Just an incredible amount to track with this looming Tuesday-Thursday storm in the Bay Area. All of the following on the table:
- Damaging wind
- Flooding rain
- Massive waves
- Thunderstorms
- Waterspouts

Happy winter solstice, to those who celebrate. San Diego will go through the first three weeks of December with no measurable rain at all. It will make up for it this week. Two inches of rain or more is likely from Tuesday through Friday, and more is possible next weekend. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The last full day of fall is off to a gray start in inland North County. The low clouds that had been shrouding coastal areas in recent days advanced east. Visibility under 1/4 of a mile. We can still expect unseasonable warmth into Monday, then a shift to storminess Tuesday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

We’re just two days from the official start of winter, and we’re still hitting the 80s in the S.D. County valleys. The San Pasqual Valley reached 83, Santee 82, Escondido & Poway 81, Ramona & Fallbrook, 80. Meanwhile, cirrus clouds danced over Escondido. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

A considerable number of ensemble members predict strong wind gusts (60+ mph) along the Bay Area coastline late Dec. 23 / early Dec. 24. The pattern is favorable for a low-pressure system deepening upon landfall. Could even reach bombogenesis status (>=18mb drop in 24 hours). #CAwx

How wet will we get next week? The weather service says forecast models indicate areas west of the mountains in San Diego County should record 1.5 to 2 inches of rain from Tuesday through Christmas night. The mountains could get 3 inches. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

“These moisture plumes are typically only about 100 to 200 miles wide, narrow enough that relatively small north or south shifts would dramatically change rainfall totals across the Bay Area.”

Ex: 5-day precip difference between the GFS and ECMWF models. Uncertainty!

Escondido sunrise this morning, from Sean Peer. The weather service expects a warmer day for the coast and valleys, with inland spots topping 80 degrees. Then cooling on Friday. Odds of rain on Tuesday are increasing, but widespread, heavier rain should begin Wednesday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Not only was yesterday's Arctic sea-ice extent a record low for the day, yesterday's extent beat every year prior to 2024 by over half a million square kilometers.

The Arctic currently has a streak of 21 straight days of record low sea-ice extent.

Nice sunrise color this a.m. in inland North County. … It’s beginning to look a lot like a wet Christmas week in S.D. County. The weather service says rain could begin as early as Tuesday, but best chances for heavier rain are on Christmas Eve & Day. Rain also possible Friday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

For those with on rain their Christmas wish list, this from the National Weather Service: Confidence is understandably
low in any forecast that far out, but if the majority of current
ensemble solutions are right, SoCal would get some rain by the
time Santa Claus arrives. #sandiegoweather #CAwx
