: “What We Left Behind” by eye_of_a_cat.
Summary:
He looks confused at the mug she puts in his hand: one more thing that makes no sense. "What's this?"
"Tea. I'm not poisoning you, it's tea."
"Thank you?"
"You're a valuable asset."
He lifts it to his lips and draws in the steam, a deep, shaking gulp of breath. "That's not flattery, Kleya."
Kleya and Erskin, from space espionage co-workers to Yavin IV.

the Bajoran version of the Bechdel test is “do two named women talk to each other about something other than murder” and I love “Deep Space Nine” because it fails almost every episode

all adaptations are in a sense fanfiction, as they're plainly derivative/transformative works, especially when a change of medium is involved.

The use of AI to marionette a woman whose tortured existence was spent trying to carve her own life and identity out of the space men forced her into is both damningly macabre and a surprisingly perfect encapsulation of the problems with this ghoulish use of technology.

#TROPSpoilers Looking at the leaked TROP filming photos and:
a) after a battle, judging from guy on the ground there? Sauron getting handed over to Númenor?

b) does that TREE on the top right look kind of SILVER to anyone else? 👀👀
Very zoom lens photo of a film set where it’s difficult to see much, but there’s someone on a horse and at least one figure sprawled on the ground

every time you dnf a novel, it creates a pocket universe where the characters are stuck in a time loop that restarts at the point in the story you stopped reading.

We wouldn’t have the Star Wars books we have without Carol Titelman and Lucy Wilson getting it started and keeping it running when it mattered the most in the early years.

Random fun fact of the day - women are the reason #StarWars #publishing exists. And the reason it has been so successful that it could endure as it has for so many decades.

(I'm an expert on this stuff)

my biggest beef with bluesky is that I get way more updates on what Curtis Yarvin or Peter Thiel than anything on the African continent

What the Twitter takeover did so effectively was fracture the way we get our news. If, for example, I want to get in-depth updates on Sudan I still check in with Twitter as that's where a lot of the biggest accounts are. There's no one-stop shop anymore.

Entirely reasonable! I loved Legends and read everything I could get my hands on until some time in the New Jedi Order era, then drifted away from it and was quite surprised to come back to SW years later to find out everything was decanonised and I had no idea what was going on any more, lol

haha, it is NOT going to happen. Though I do find it funny to imagine some guy informed entirely by YouTube ‘lore explainers’ thinking “FINALLY, a lore-accurate show!” and then sitting through an hour of ‘Of Beleriand and its Realms’ going “wtf is this, GCSE Geography? where’s the battle scenes?”

Write the book you would like to see someone pull from a higgledy piggledy pile in a secondhand shop 63 years after your death and say, "This looks fucking weird. I think I will buy it for Joan."

this interview also features this lovely/horrifying/relatable anecdote about Christopher’s anxiety dreams when putting together the Silmarillion:
photo of book text: “Breaking a long silence in the media with an interview in the French newspaper Le Monde, he shared exceptionally intimate thoughts in a retrospective judgement on The Silmarillion:
Right away I thought that the book was good, but *a little false*, in the sense that I had had to invent some passages,' he explains. At the time, he even had a worrying dream.
I was in my father's study at Oxford. He came in and started looking for something with great anxiety. Then I realized in horror that it was The Silmarillion, and I was terrified at the thought that he would discover *what I had done* [emphases mine]."]”

Christopher Tolkien on the Peter Jackson LOTR films:

‘They eviscerated the book, turning it into an action movie for 15-25 year olds… The gulf that has opened between the beauty, the solemnity of the work, and what it has become, all of this is beyond me.’

If someone is going to make a screen adaption of a well loved book series, the absolute bare minimum requirement should be that the person doing it should have read them and be a fan. That way you get LotR instead of RoP.

An unhinged literary opinion needs to be like Muriel Spark believing T.S. Eliot was sending her coded messages through his plays, not 'hear me out, I don't like Dickens'. That is simply a literary opinion. The hinges are very much intact.

One of the things I love about OFMD is that it DID feel real and it DID feel horny and NOT everyone was conventionally hot. It's literally the opposite of 'everyone was hot and no one was horny'!

when i was younger (20ish) I read hyperion and in it a character refers to a building as having been destroyed by a "hellwhip", the archaic term for a laser weapon and it permanently altered my perception of how sci-fi should be written
