The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Avoiding the snow emergency parking scramble. Yet another thing to be thankful for about not owning a car.
Minneapolis has declared a snow emergency. Parking rules will begin at 9 p.m. tonight, Nov. 30. https://www.minneapolismn.gov/getting-around/snow/snow-emergencies/snow-parking-rules/

Walking in the snow last night with a friend I was asked if I had a neighborhood sledding hill when I was a kid.

"Not one I could get to on my own"

Suburban dev patterns hold children hostage to the car. That access pinch-point robs us of so much natural exploration, personal development, and joy.

Great video by @ohtheurbanity.bsky.social on the successes of a small overlooked northern city. 4-13% bike mode-share in a decade with a goal of 25%

They even have a pop density lower than St Paul!

Dear diary,

Today a vehicular, rec-only cyclist told me that pushing for safer infrastructure is akin to being a hemorrhoid.

I resisted the urge to ask if he has considered washing his bibs more often or switching to a different saddle.

Ice cream will be my reward.

The sooner BikeMN's GiveMN page hits $20k, the sooner I can shift focus to putting together a really cute @bikemn.bsky.social holiday book guide for parents.

Please help me get off of the fundraising train.
97% of the way there. For the low price of just $605 you could be the reason we don't have to post about this giving campaign again until next year.

We'll even throw in a sweatshirt and some merino socks!

Will you be the hero we need?*

(*heroes also count at the $5-$600 level)

I know many of you value @streets.mn

We cover transportation and land use that no one else does, and we do a damn good job of it.

It's a small and lean org. 1 part time staffer. Lots of volunteers.

We need your support to keep it afloat.

Seriously. If you can please do.

Those parking spots are not sustaining the businesses.

Ok we'll be the one's who admit it: We love snowy winters.

Keeping our winters iconic means more trips need to be car free. They're the largest source of direct pollution in MN &the indirect pollution from induced overconsumption are stealing snow from future generations.

Did you know that state funded roads in Minnesota aren't allowed to use designs that would keep people safe?

Pretty crazy, but that is the reality that we're leading the charge on getting changed this coming legislative session.

Help us win this fight by putting money in our GiveMN account:

This is what happens when you delay maintenance over and over and over. The next few summers are going to be full of deferred maintenance construction, and it will likely be this way going forward unless we some how catch up the giant back log of work.

Use transit. Use bikes. Walk more. Drive less.

Hey, so I know buying jerseys in winter is weird & having to think of holiday gifts this early is even weirder.

But these are great. The flag jerseys now contain the Ojibwe & Anishinaabe versions of our State Motto alongside the very cute new state seal.

And the profit helps make biking safer!

Thank you to KARE 11 for being the first media organization to actually delve into the fact that the vehicle that hit &harmed Janet Stotko was & is illegal to purchase &operate in Minnesota.
