Here are some things I've been working on recently:
Alvin Brooks shoulders his shotgun and refuses to shoot a retreating suspect in a still of animation from the documentary The Heroic True-Life Adventures of Alvin Brooks. Poster for It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, featuring Clarence the Angel pulling a haggard George Bailey from the freezing river. A cable car reaches the top of Ještěd mountain, where stands the incredible architecture of Ještěd Tower. A screaming Peter Maybury gets pulled into the sky while tied like a mummy to his steamer trunk in a scene from The Airship Quebec.

A remake of John Carpenter's THE THING, but it's about transmission of lice in a third grade classroom. And let the third graders have flamethrowers.

Rest in Peace to the great Drew Struzan, a man whose work sparked the imaginations of a whole generation of movie nerds. The master is gone.

I had the privilege of visiting him in his studio once and getting to talk shop. Here’s his words on one of his masterpieces:

A societal embrace of this regurgitated pablum would guarantee there would never be another Marilyn Monroe and there would never be another Game of Thrones

RIP the great Drew Struzan. Even his rejected comps are better than any art I'll ever make in life.
Pencilled Drew Struzan comp for the poster of Big Trouble in Little China.

RIP D'Angelo. His Black Messiah album was overshadowed that year by Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly being released three months later, but it's a fantastic album, a beautiful, intelligent close to the trilogy.

This is my second-favorite SNL performance ever:

Dave Sim is my single instance of "separate the letterer from the lettering," but I'm sure there's something solid somewhere in Cerebus.

I not only memorized phone numbers, I can still recall my friend David's number all these years later, and still sing the tune that accompanied it in my brain.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

...In this one, is everyone around you starving to death (to the point of sometimes eating poison to fill their empty stomachs) while you in the meantime rampage the countryside, slaughtering boars and bears and leaving hundreds of pounds of meat to rot, taking only the hides with you?

We just watched Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure with the student cinema club last week. Might be a good one for this list. The films of Béla Tarr too, perhaps.

Happy Columbo Day! Maybe eat an egg roll with a cannelloni in honor, bowl of chili on the side?
Columbo with a bunch of food in front of him “When I was a kid I bet I had more egg rolls than I had cannelloni.”

If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.
