What was reported in @politico is offensive and very concerning. But I'm also glad that many leaders, including @EliseStefanik and @RepMikeLawler, spoke out strongly and swiftly against these hateful statements. This is what leadership looks like - and is how decency and morality can be modeled.

Remember when Biden bungled a comment and it sounded like he called all MAGA garbage, quickly corrected and it was still a 3 day news story?

Somehow it's only "demonizing half of the country" when Democrats mildly criticize Trump supporters. This just doesn't count

A terrific AFP fact check uses reverse image searches to expose how a White House video took scenes from Florida, Texas, South Carolina and Nebraska and lied that they showed "Chicago is in chaos."

In 2024, I wrote a story for Texas Monthly about Michelle Haas, whose complaints resulted in the removal of books about slavery from historic Texas slave plantations. Haas sued us, alleging defamation, and was represented by the preferred lawyer of billionaire J.P. Bryan. Today, we won on appeal.

COURT OF APPEALS

THIRTEENTH DISTRICT OF TEXAS The conclusion of the appeals court decision, which states: The trial court's judgment is reversed. We remand the cause to the trial court with

instructions to (1) grant appellants' TCPA motion to dismiss, (2) award court costs and reasonable attorney's fees to appellants in accordance with the statute, (3) consider whether to assess sanctions against Haas in accordance with the statute. See TEX. Civ. PRAC. & REM. CODE ANN. § 27.009(a).

Again, it is a full-blown federal felony crime for anyone in the White House or Executive Office of the President to order tax investigations into anyone.

And it's not just a crime to DO it, it's even a federal crime for an employee not to REPORT such an order to the Treasury Inspector General.

Unfortunately this isn’t the revenge fantasy it’s being made out to be, especiallu not whent it comes to the women. Massive CW for rape and trauma-based suicide english.elpais.com/culture/2022...
In the Günther family home, 12 people died - some poisoned themselves, some slit their wrists, and some were shot with a hunting rifle. Huber describes the horror of a witness to multiple gang rapes by Soviet soldiers (almost two million German women were sexually assaulted at the end of the war).
Afterward, many of the rape victims staggered down to the Tollense River and drowned themselves. Some led their children by the hand into the river after loading stones into their pockets, purses and backpacks, unwittingly emulating Virginia Woolf's suicide in 1941.
It’s very coear in the historical record that the Red Army user mass rape as a weapon of vengeance. It was partly a reaction to the Wehrmacht’s unspeakable horrors but the record ic clear. www.theguardian.com/books/2002/m...

You mischaracterize my point and the historical record: many low-level Nazi government functionaries (schoolteachers, low-level bureaucrats, etc.) were re-absorbed into German society and the state. I have said this many times explicitly during our discussion, and before you even entered the thread.
It’s strange that neither you nor Gabrielle identify a point, despite your dramatic rhetoric.

Here’s my point: Rooting out fascists from the state and society requires a focused and sustained long-term project. They don’t simply kill themselves in large numbers.

Schoolteachers are not ordinary citizens? Coates brief summary of Judt barely touches on the vast scale of how many ordinary Nazis were reintegrated into society and government structures. It actually became a driving issue in 1960s-70s West German anti-fascism.
In Judt’s Postwar he makes clear that many Nazi “ordinary citizens” retained their positions in the new “denazified” state apparatus. Ta-nehisi Coates review here: www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

How many employees and staffers of this administration must be outed as Hitler Admirers before it becomes a widely accepted Problem
Or they became an official in the Federal Republic (or occasionally the GDR). Many Nazi- linked industrialists retained their commercial power. Let’s not overlook how problematic the post-war transition was.
