The rest of us can see plain as day that Bari Weiss is successful because she chose to propagate fascist talking points when fascism was ascendant. She and her colleagues will focus on her being savvy or brave or whatever but aligning with power at the right moment is pretty much all there is to it.
emilydwarfield.bsky.social
It would also explain fascism and how to fight it, but it’s just not psychologically possible for these people to accept that, had life gone a little differently, they’d be in an ICE detention facility or on the streets themselves. Best to just let these folks play around in their fantasy world
emilydwarfield.bsky.social
If society were composed of interlocking systems of cruel hierarchies that they just so happened to come out on top of, maybe in part because of hard work and character but also largely because of the way the die landed, that might mean their success is illegitimate, and then who are they?
emilydwarfield.bsky.social
You get to know enough of these people and, no matter how smart they are, you see they really struggle with the idea that they’re doing well in large part because of luck. Their ego is built on the belief that things are going well for them because they’re good people and the world is just.
emilydwarfield.bsky.social
The main reason why our major institutions are failing to stand up to fascism right now is that they are run by people who are by definition successful within the current system and therefore are psychologically incapable of understanding its massive weaknesses

This is really smart. Amazed at the hysteria over the ascendance of a woman entrepreneur who clearly knows how to cover and sell news and who's not afraid to take on a mob. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Applying to jobs still feels like gambling. I have a finite amount of time that I could be using to make small but guaranteed amounts of money, and instead I'm taking a 1 in 1000 shot at a $100k salary with benefits or nothing.

Found a job posting with a fax number, and I'm HYPED. We're taking job apps back to the 1990s--if your resume gets trashed, it's because a human hand has physically placed it in the bin.

Human trafficking is not actually the better— or only!— alternative to jail. Hope this helps.
emilydwarfield.bsky.social
I think youve misinterpreted that post
emilydwarfield.bsky.social
If I offered “work therapy” where clients performed free domestic labor for me, I’d lose my license and go to jail, but when “Christian” nonprofits do it, it’s either God’s will or, worst case scenario, a labor violation resulting in some civil penalties like paying back wages
emilydwarfield.bsky.social
The only reason this isn’t considered trafficking via fraud is because crime is something poor people do
fascistdemtracker.bsky.social
Fun fact about the Salvation Army: they use a form of substance use treatment called work therapy. Oh, and by treatment, I mean they have people who have been convicted of drug charges work for their stores & warehouses in exchange for room, board, around a $1 a week, and minimal actual therapy.

TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it
One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

Probably the only compelling argument I’ve seen for AI is that it can be used as an adaptive tool for people with cognitive disabilities and language disorders, so I am super interested in this

This book is titled “Disabling Intelligences” for many reasons. First, because so-called “AI” is built from historical commitments to the excision of disability from the classification of humanity.

Just a fun update that in one week it’s now up to $55 with tax. I was told the market wouldn’t allow prices to rise higher than most people could afford, that it would self-correct, that this was Econ 101 stuff, so can all the Econ 101 students explain to me wtf happens next

Feels insane to type this anywhere, but I think it’s making me more insane not to: I spend like $100/wk on food for myself and now almost $50/wk on food for my 2 cats. Fifty dollars. Per week. On cat food. This cost like $30 2 years ago. I feel like I’m losing my mind
2.9 ounce pack of 24 cans of science diet urinary hairball control minces chicken cat food is now $47.52

A group of 53 people with #LongCOVID joined a clinical trial for Vyvgart. For many of them, the treatment changed everything.

Then, without warning, Argenx canceled the trial.

Most of them have now relapsed.

They're calling on the NIH and HHS to study the drug: bit.ly/48l1Qp5
A photo Nicole Barrick, a woman in a pink KN95 mask, receives an infusion of Vyvgart. The text reads, "The Sick Times. Vyvgart brought us back to life, but the Long COVID trial was canceled. We are calling on the NIH and HHS to study the drug. By Clare Banaszewski, Nicole Barrick, Mike Bilik, Addie Davis, Mia Delli Gatti, Ellie Hayes, Roman White." "For those living with Long COVID, every ounce of hope is hard-won. This isn’t just about physical symptoms. It’s about the emotional toll of being given hope — and then having it taken away." - Vyvgart clinical trial participants
