Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I still remember some of my previous home phone numbers and family’s numbers because you wouldn’t know them unless you memorized it. In fact, I want to say it was either kindergarten or 1st grade where they made you write down your name, address, and phone number to make sure you memorized them.

Often, I believe, this only SEEMS like the case because so many women get saddled with responsibilities so early in life, and we have to step up, that it LOOKS like we are more mature and more responsible. We are not.

So, I had to get a mask for my nephew and one of my nieces was also with us. She’s not even two yet. We went to Spirit Halloween. She did so good in the store. She had a death grip on me, but she only hid her face a couple times. She was more curious than scared. Another horror girlie, I hope. 🤞🏽

It’s still one of my favorite tv moments.
