Hey! Does linguistics have a mascot? The wug doesn't feel right—I think it might have copyright issues, and it's too English-specific. We need something universal and copyright-free. Any ideas for existing ones, or interested in proposing one?

I was looking for ideas of how to start with the protolanguage of a conlang and ran into concepticon.clld.org reminds me of the Conlanger's Thesaurus by William Annis. Thinking of mixing the two together in some way :D

And there are kanji-latin and kanji-kana characters in actual use, some of which have recently been proposed for Unicode encoding (alongside some han-hangul hybrids too)

Interestingly, 'no' (vs. 'yes') isn't related to Spanish 'no'.

English 'no' stems from *naiwan ("never").

Spanish 'no' comes from Latin 'nōn', from Old Latin 'noinom' ("not one thing").

This means Spanish 'no' is related to German 'nein', from Proto-Germanic *nainan, a distant cousin of 'noinom'!
The English words 'no' and 'no' don't have the same origin.

'No', the opposite of 'yes', comes from West-Germanic *naiw ("never").

'No' as in 'no pain, no gain' arose as a variant of 'none' and stems from *nain ("not any").

They only share the n-, from *ne ("not").

You should get this book.
I have been encouraged to tell you that Bye Bye I Love You, my book about language at the beginning and end of life, officially goes on sale in one month.

For you who ever beheld a babbling baby and wondered where their journey of signifying might wrap up, I wrote this book for you.

This important question about the role of children in cultural evolution is a less domain-specific version of a question that has long exercised linguists. It's a good example, in fact, of how linguists should be very much engaged in the field of cultural evolution.
Excited to share that our BBS target article — "Children as agents of cultural adaptation" — is online & open for commentary! In it, @sheinalew.bsky.social & I argue that children's peer cultures might play an important & understudied role in cultural adaptation.

Sure, English is a Dumpster™ fire that drinks prescriptivist tears.

But lexicology and grammar are different things, and the errorist writer knows it. I'll see your addition of "enshittification" to the dictionary and raise you a tangible perception of your abstract noun. Bring the buttwipe.

Most people think storytelling starts with a great idea.

But there's a crucial step before that.

Skipping it dooms your story before it's even started...
