The phonetics lab had a great time at Methods and Techniques in Phonetic Sciences this weekend! There’s some really neat research out there. We loved checking in on what techniques other labs are utilizing, and sharing how we’re using free classification at the UofC.

Okay, I finally found some time to post this episode on YouTube, with subtitles! 😎 Not too bad, but the star is of course @phono-logical.bsky.social with his vast knowledge of rap music, Sociolinguistics, Phonology, etc. Such a great episode, recommended to everyone! youtu.be/EtJJ_8NGSGI?...

Now more than ever, education in the social sciences that isn’t being gatekept by moral panics around (especially US) universities is super important, and basic linguistics classes can be really useful places to start unlearning a lot of racist thought and “common sense” about language and humans.
I have seen an increase of subscriptions on my channel, so why not advertise it a bit. If anyone needs a full course on Phonetics and Intro to Linguistics (which I created for my students), feel free to like, share, and subscribe :)

Very few people know that I was the host of the podcast, "Linguistically Aware", broadcast once monthly on a local radio station, CJSW 90.9.

A very informative and interesting read👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
1/ Last week, a BBC report and podcast claimed UK universities enrol students with poor English to balance books. This sparked two reactions: "no shit, Sherlock" or outright denial. 🧵https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0mzdejg1d3o

Some students mentioned Gramle (spectrogram reading) to me yesterday so I solved one today and filmed it describing what I can see, thinking it might be useful for the finals. Great fun!

Humans can write stories. LLMs can write stories. What happens when they write stories with the exact same prompt?
