THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER: Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut is an expansive, evocative work of cinematic poetry with a career-best performance by Imogen Poots. It's a formally ambitious vision that shows Stewart has got the stuff 📽️

Though there are many great movies to watch this holiday weekend, don't sleep on the LEFT-HANDED GIRL. Directed by Shih-Ching Tsou from a script she co-wrote with Sean Baker, it proves to be more sweet than bitter while feeling just as alive as their past works. See it (*checks notes*) on Netflix 📽️
LEFT-HANDED GIRL: Shih-Ching Tsou and Sean Baker make a bittersweet family dramedy that echoes TAKE OUT from 20 years ago. While it trades NYC for Taipei and a bike for a scooter, it maintains the same sense of attention to detail 📽️

At North Shore Movies this week I reviewed Shih-Ching Tsou and Sean Baker’s lovely LEFT-HANDED GIRL, which is like THE FLORIDA PROJECT except it doesn’t rip your heart out of your chest.
Review – Left-Handed Girl
LEFT-HANDED GIRL. With Nina Ye, Shih-Yua Ma, Janel Tsai, Ten-Hui Huang, Akio Chen. Written by Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou. Directed by Shih-Ching Tsou. Rated R for sexual content and language. 1…

ZOOTOPIA 2: Failing to creatively expand the playfulness of its predecessor, it's a sequel jammed with references to classics of cinema, painfully basic puns it keeps beating you over the head with, characters built around a single gag, and little else 📽️

Will have more on it quite soon, but resharing my rave review of Rian Johnson’s wonderful WAKE UP DEAD MAN now that you can see it in theaters. It's not only the best, most fun KNIVES OUT yet, but also the most spiritual with the power to make even Johnson’s greatest doubters into true believers 📽️
WAKE UP DEAD MAN: Rian Johnson’s glorious, goofy gothic horror is the best KNIVES OUT movie yet with an outstanding duo in Daniel Craig & Josh O'Connor. Taking shots at STAR WARS and Netflix while reflecting on faith?, it's a damn miracle 📽️

Want to also add I too found the dialogue to be absolutely insufferable this season. Like an increasing number of recent streaming shows, it feels written for an audience only half paying attention & ultimately punishes those who are following each stilted sentence. Please, make it stop, I beg you 📺
Sorry kids, but #StrangerThings5 is off to a rough beginning of the end. The final season of the hit Netflix series has the longest episodes, but also the most painfully clunky dialogue. It only makes one nostalgic for its start nearly a decade ago 📺

In contrast, I just finished this week's Pluribus, which would be entirely unwatchable unless you were looking at the screen most of the time.

And if you were watching, you would have been rewarded with the best physical comedy every performed by a drone.

Y'all we have gotta stop doing this second screen dialogue thing where characters just repeat plot points to each other to make sure everyone is up to speed and the audience isn't left behind.

Eventually it's just a bunch of people in a room talking about a TV show they're in.
For @dreadcentral.bsky.social, I reviewed the first volume of STRANGER THINGS 5, a messy but invigorating return that sees the show battling the weight of its own legacy through clunky dialogue, weird pacing, and yes, that old Hawkins magic.

STRANGER THINGS begins the end by again looping the narrative, which means the show now holds itself in the same regard as the '80s classics it's long fashioned itself after. that's a bolder move than most of the storytelling itself. @vulture.com:
