So the reason this is bad is because it's EXCEPTIONALLY parasitic is a subterfuge style way. It puts the recipient in the position of having to craft and carry the convo on the spot with nothing to go on, hell, they likely don't even know you! If you DM have something to say and lead the convo!
This has always been a fucking pet peeve of mine as well. Do Not come into my DMs and just start a message with "hi" or "hello". If you're going to start off a conversation, at least have the decency to have a damn topic you wish to discuss with me about.
I'm not trying to dunk down on people who want to try and reach out and be social, but I find the concept of "Just talk" somewhat lacking.
Call me old fashioned, but a simple introduction goes a long way. I stead of just going "Hi" or "Hello", try think of what you want.
