UK citizens: there's another problem bill. If passed, it will lead to a central database around identifying children.

It will also aim to require age verification on downloading VPNs from app stores.

You can also call the Judiciary Committee here. Let them know repealing Section 230 is a very bad idea.

Thats... some consulation. However I know Graham touted doing a hearing on either changing it or repealing it on its anniversary.

We musnt be complacent. Especially not now. But we must also be careful not to fatigue as things pile on

Really from now till January, really because we’re probably going to go through the same government shutdown song and dance then iirc.

I’m pretty sure the senate has some big break week around Jan, too, with only the house in session.

Ok but seriously this is really good that you’re talking about this, the more voices against these bad internet bills the better.

I’m pretty sure the hearing this clip is from is the one from the thread Onyx talks about in this thread. It happened like 2-3 days ago.

Today, I also come bearing notes from the Judiciary Committee hearing on "online child safety."

+ THE GOOD:
- No vote on any legislation.
- Anger on KOSA in the House being defanged.
- A few new bills, two of them seem ok:
+ the (ECHO) Act
+ the Stop Sextortion Act

+ What do we do?
- Keep an eye on the committee.
- Said what they WANT to do, not clear on what they WILL do.
- Watch for Feburary 2026.
- Call your reps. Tell them to reinforce Section 230 & oppose bad bills like KOSA.
- Do. Not. Panic.

+ THE BAD(cont)
- One of new bills might be problem: Sentencing Accountability for Exploitation(SAFE) Act. Reason: punishment for use of encryption.
- No clear opposition to bills' potential privacy or censorship issues.
- Popularity of social media ban of those under 16.

+ THE BAD:
- Common agreement: revisit, change, or throw out Section 230.
- Senator Graham wants Section 230 discussion come Feburary 2026.
- Fragmented support on bad bills: Stop CSAM Act & KOSA

This is, uh, not a smart move. Section 230 has its flaws, but repealing it without having an *extremely solid* plan in place to replace the protections for free speech it offers is tantamount to banning the LGBTQ+ community and others from public online spaces.

Eight days ago I said one of the signs the bubble was bursting was if data center REITs like Fermi were in trouble. Yesterday Fermi had a $150m tenant pull out and its stock dropped 40%. All roads lead to The Smiling Man!

No. For this to even work from a technical perspective it means they'd need to break encryption because how can they know whether or not they want to "publish" something if they don't know what it is?
There's not just ethical and moral dilemmas there's technical ones, too.

In this administration they’re gonna impede anything anti-regime. Queer people, black rights, the disabled and neurodivergent, or just anti-regime political views.

230 is flawed, but we can’t let these fucknuts get rid of it now.

Section 230 protects online platforms from being considered publishers. This protects them from constant lawsuits over user content, allowing user content to flourish. Repealing it would force platforms to aggressively censor users to avoid liability, devastating the Internet.

Australia screwed up so badly here, especially in a nation where you are required to vote otherwise you are fined.

The law could severely limit teens access to political thought outside official channels and have significant impacts on political engagement.

KOSA is a censorship bill that won’t make kids safe. Instead, it'll put all internet users at risk, especially youth. If you believe in a free and open internet, tell your lawmakers to reject #KOSA!

I find it interesting how Section 230 has also been blamed for why we can't get rid of KF and 4chan and all that.

And that getting rid of it will be a panacea for getting rid of disinformation and online harassment.

Clearly things have changed.

Individual bills may fail but these legislators want to present the appearance of a unified push against sec 230/privacy rights

Its worth keeping perspective that not every bill is The End, but everytime they start yapping i think we do need to do our own yapping to counter their narrative!

I think the way a lot of federal reps keep blustering about how section 230 and encryption rights needs repealing is dangerous even if an individual bill is basically dead in the water, because they want to manufacture a consensus around the issue

Its really important imo for citizens to push back when some senator starts mouthing off about how section 230 needs repealing, or other blatantly bad ideas

But its also good to have perspective re: the actual chances of a particular gambit going through!
Now, before everybody panics and runs around like headless chickens, they have yet to introduce the bill, and Graham and Whitehouse have tried to pass this before and failed. The previous versions have never made it past the introduction stage.
