The Xbench opposes the Government’s attempt to weaken Freedom of Information laws.

Good to see the Opposition recognise these deep flaws - the bill should not pass.

We need more transparency, not less & I'll keep fighting for your right to know.

Bold regulation on privacy would actually do something the social media age ban won't do re @drwaus.bsky.social - it would challenge the business model of social media corporations that rapaciously acquire data to use it to advertise and keep you on platforms as long as possible.

The social media age ban may actually mean more people have more data collected about them - it means the risk from hacks and leaks may increase and goes against 'data minimisation' principles according to @drwaus.bsky.social

Australia the stupid country

China is our biggest trading partner, by far.

Our slavish dependence on Amerika for our foreign and defence policies damages our perspective and options with China

We may as well shoot ourselves in the foot if this persists

Lack of China capability can only do harm to society: Our current situation is a disgrace
In March 2023, the Australian Academy of the Humanities sounded the alarm on the decline in our understanding and knowledge of China through a report on “Australia’s China Knowledge Capability”.

Democracies are working hard to muzzle free speech

And when democracies start to do that, the principles and vision upholding democracy start to crumble, which is exactly what is happening in many democracies - AU, NZ, UK and France

Youth-focused anti-bullying organisation Project Rockit are saying the impact of the social media age ban on young people will be harsh - focus should be on the corporations pushing algorithms, not on young people

Let's be clear

If people are still using the word "presidency / president" and tRump together, they are misreading the issues and enhancing the problem

It infers legitimacy

Be explicit. Call it out for what it is so that everyone is clear and on the same page unequivocally

I'll be asking questions in the inquiry into online age verification and the social media age ban today - deeply concerned about the privacy impacts of these and the attempt to remove young people from places for support and advocacy.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

Before it won the 2022 federal election, the Labor Party promised stronger action to curb climate change. Since then, it has approved coal and gas projects that will emit a cumulative 6.5 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide. satpa.pe/lzpWeLc
Labor’s slate for fossil fuel approvals
The Albanese government has already approved 31 fossil fuel projects, and more than that are waiting, even as renewables overtake coal as the top source of electricity.

Well it is actually true - and in Victoria at least it has been accompanied by messages about emissions targets. The point I was making was that for most Australians rooftop solar is not a political issue.
