Multiple sources have confirmed that ICE/Border Patrol is headed back to the Raleigh and Durham areas for undefined deportation actions. We've heard 50 ICE agents, charter flights and hotels booked for all of them in the Raleigh area.

Let us know what you hear.

Linguistics DDRIG is also archived 🐦🐦

this could mean it will be replaced by some new program, but at this point in time we have to assume many DDRIG opportunities that are "out of alignment" with admin priorities are just being discontinued.
The NSF Bio Anthro Program DDRIG, Cultural Anthrpology DDRIG, and Archaeology DDRIG have all been archived (as of yesterday afternoon). Please speak with your grad students and plan accordingly. To say I am angry and depressed about this is an understatement.

“It is not acceptable to recruit a variety of students into the laboratory, subject them to a variety of stress tests and abuses, and then keep the students who thrive under abuse and get rid of the students who aren't able to thrive in the lab. That's straight-up exploitation.”

👏👏👏
You know those labs that keep harming students, again and again? Some reflections on why it's so hard to stop this from happening and where our responsibilities lie.

8-year-old: At school today, we did a crossword, and somebody said it had a curse word in it, but I'm not sure which one.

Me: Probably "ass."

8: Why's that?

Me: It's in lots of other words, like grass and crass and embarrass.

8: And asshole!

11 years ago today, 12 year old Tamir Rice was gunned down by police officers on Cleveland’s west side.

The officer shot him within seconds of arriving at the park he was playing in.

Tamir’s life mattered. It still does. My thoughts are with his family today.

What are the most important aspects of a job talk for an assistant professor? 👀

Mine include:

1. Understandable to the (general) audience

2. Generate a sense of excitement

3. Clear sense of future directions

Usually these things work better when there’s not too much crammed in.

“Never trust a professor who makes their grad students pay for their own food or coffee.” -the immortal Chris Krueger, sending me off to grad school
What’s the most significant advice you received from a teacher?

I had a Geology prof who always said “have strong opinions, loosely held”

Be passionate, assess alternatives with conviction, take sides. But don’t fall so in love with your opinions that you can’t change them with better data.
