The deepest aspect of the Epstein scandal, I think, is this question: and it's one that many, many sectors of polite society seem to go out of their way to avoid asking

so much focus has been put on the prince that after reading this book, it wasn’t him I thought about most; it was the casual visitors to Epstein’s New York mansion, the illustrious men and occasional woman whom Giuffre says she encountered at dinners there.

In respect of these people I’d like to ask: who the fuck did they think the 17-year-old at the table was? What did they think she was doing there? Only Melinda Gates, who met Epstein once and cited him as a factor in the breakdown of her marriage to Bill Gates, sensed what apparently none of these people could put their finger on. Giuffre quotes from a statement made by Gates after her meeting with Epstein: “I regretted it the second I walked in the door. He was abhorrent. He was evil personified.” It was an insight that evidently escaped geniuses like the MIT professors Epstein continued to advise long after he’d become a convicted sex offender.

If the president asks you to illegally knock down the White House and you do it, you should be arrested.

We have to go after all of this like you go after any criminal enterprise. Start with street level and work up.

If this had been clear to you and everyone in the Administration on January 20, 2009, what do you think you could have done differently?
I think we would have done the same thing, and that is try, because it seemed unbelievable to us, and we felt that we owed it to the American people to try mightily to change their minds. So we tried all kinds of strategies to get the Republicans to come to the table and meet us not even halfway— just a little bit of the way. All of the changes and amendments, for example, that were made to the Affordable Care Act were designed to try to make it bipartisan. We had the votes if we'd wanted to just push through what we wanted from the beginning.
What was it that you could have pushed through from the beginning?
We could have pushed through a plan that didn't have all of these amendments.
There were almost two hundred of them, all of which I have put firmly out of my mind, but, for example, we really had hoped that Olympia Snowe would come on board, and we worked with her. We worked with several of the Republicans to say, O.K., what is it that you need in order to support this? Keep in mind it was modelled after the Massachusetts health-care bill that Governor Romney had endorsed, so we started out with a compromise. We didn't start out with a public option or single-payer:
