listening to heavy rain on the roof and windows while reading a book from the giant stack beside your bed counts as writing this morning

This is Zebby. He finally managed to catch his tail. Super proud of the accomplishment and would like to pretend no one saw the part right after. 12/10 (IG: zebbythegolden)

I am here for any version, satire, pastiche, fan fic, or revisionist retelling of William Carlos Williams.

so much depends
upon

a red skate
board

glazed with rain
water

beside the fire
hydrant

that is also
red
a bright red skateboard abandoned in leaves next to a wet sidewalk, with a similarly red fire hydrant on the boulevard

Was just thinking about how lovely that book is.

I'll stand by "I am tired of tidings," for the most part. But getting a message that @thedodgemag.bsky.social nominated "East of Eden" for the Best of the Net anthology, those were tidings that put some wind back in my sails. Thank you to the editors, especially @sambranopoet.bsky.social.

One of my favorite moments from Nobel Prize history:

The Nobel Committee couldn’t reach Stanford professor Paul Milgrom to let him know that he had been awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics, so his fellow winner, Robert Wilson, went over to his house in the middle of the night to wake him up!

Worth a friendly reminder that the next set of nation-wide No Kings protests are set for October 18th.

There's probably one in your area.

I am not generally a crowds or protests sort of person, but there's one in my town and I'll be at it on the 18th.

No Kings
As the president escalates his authoritarian power grab, the NO KINGS non-violent movement continues to rise stronger. We are united once again to remind the world: America has No Kings and the power ...

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

“That there’s a damn shame, Bill. Yeah, no, sorry, I didn’t see anything. I was visiting my sister’s tree over on Morgan. I’ll ask around and let you know if I hear something, though. Geez, what a world, am I right? Anyway, your homeowners policy should cover it, no?”

Really lovely (and funny) thread here on the necessity of good editors.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Just opened an abandoned desktop folder and found the beginnings to three short stories I'd completely forgotten about. And they're pretty good??

Thank you, 2024 me. 🥹
