I do Things. Sometimes develop games, sometimes write books, sometimes make videos. Sometimes nothing, honestly.
Hmm.

I can't do screenshot Saturday this week because I'd be showing you something you're really not supposed to see. 👀

One of the most boring considerations of #gamedev. Are you ready?

Being in an options/pause/something menu and pressing 'B' (or equivalent) so the options cursor goes straight to 'Back/Exit/Whatever'.

Fun. Times.

Silly string? To me, it's just string.

Yellow paint for railroading in contextual environments in game and level design?

Very unrealistic.

Plus it is clearly a car racing event between characters. Nobody is going to agree to take part at all if Sonic says "well I'll just RUN, then!" are they?
Dreading all the "Why does he need a car?" post

DUDE
THEY AREN'T DRIVING THE VEHICLES CAUSE HE NEEDS IT

THEY ARE DRIVING THE VEHICLES BECAUSE ITS COOL!!!!!!!!!

(I'm talking about Sonic)

I love designing just a normal classic medieval fantasy setting with locations like; the abandoned ruins of a castle, a lonely old library, and big giant evil lazer that turns you into dust

Listen. I'll be as direct with you all as I can.

Whatever I do that may or may not get me in trouble, whatever the back-and-forth philosophical debates are, when I'm developing games now, on this (eventual but inevitable) return, they're all secondary to one key thing:

Whatever. It. Takes.

I have a mandatory office attendance day on Monday for my normal boring day job.

Anyway...

This is one of those things that was really boring and dull, but it needed doing, so now it's done, and I never have to do it again. Thrilling, I know.

Question. Did anyone ever develop a PSX emulator that wasn't primarily concerned with accuracy, and instead lets you do things like "skip loading times because it's running on a PC"? Or was that never anyone's consideration?

Everything said in that quote sounds like a flipchart talking to a PowerPoint presentation in a board meeting for sleeping millionaires.
"To break out beyond the core audience, games need to directly connect to the evolving demand of players who increasingly seek shared world features and deeper engagement alongside high-quality narratives" EA's CEO has said, post Dragon Age: The Veilguard. bit.ly/3Q52rAP

Arbitrary gradual progress unlock system is in place. I think we're nearly done, y'know.

You ever get a Captcha that makes you think "oh damn, AM I a robot?"

You're right, you probably should've started that Thing when you were younger. But you can't now, can you? So start today, before you come back at 50 regretting it again.

Jfc you people.

This is fucking Nifflas. He made Knytt, Nightsky, so many things that WERE what "indie" was before most of the people you idolise or know about now even started.

And this is what he gets for posting enthusiastically about *game design*.

Children. I swear to god.

Oh no. Are the guys who made OutRun 2006 still employed? If not can we just fund a new studio for them, please?
February 4, 2025 at 3:05 PM
Sort of philosophical question for you. Does an ENTIRELY free game (not freemium, no IAPs or any of that garbage) need a trailer?

WHAT.
I, uh. Yeah. Yes. Please. Yes to this. Yep. Oh yeah.

Got myself a little global achievement system working. I am now convinced all those "Press Start" title screen achievements over the years are teams who were working out how achievements worked. Because that's what I did (more or less).

Mmm. No. Sanitised white minimalist boring design and something that had Lots of Money and absolutely no cultural impact at all.

That's the day the future died.
