That makes sense! I couldn't believe how many of my friends went to Eras who were suddenly Swifties, having the best time. She had so much buy-in and capitalised on it with the re-releases and that snowballed with the Eras tour. Really a napoleonic figure.

I remember when I first heard Dreamin' Eyes of Mine, I hated it to be honest! It made me feel sick and confused. I had the same thing with Erik Satie's music. It's off, it's wrong... or it demands something of you the listener. If you do a gross face and move with the rhythms, it's amazing.

Black Messiah was so good because it follows straight from Voodoo, clearing away all the junk that happened in between. You get the sense of the artist. The flash is still there but it's not as blinding as it was on Brown Sugar when it was new.

One result of Dilla's death and D'Angelo stepping away from the limelight for a decade was that their musical legacy was left to be developed by lesser artists. 3 amazing albums is enough output from anybody but it left his work vulnerable to carrion scavengers.

This "good colonialism" is so tantalising because it validates the existence of the US. So people seek out the exception to the rule "colonialism is bad". Israel has been seen as "good colonialism" for decades, and for many people it is a keystone in their entire understanding of geopolitics.

While liberals do oppose colonialism on a genuine emotional level, they also oppose violent uprising. The global failure to confront US colonialism (indigenous, vietnam etc.) has created a status quo where colonialism can be permissable in certain conditions.
