A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Trying to figure out what #SCOTUS just did with #SNAP, and why Justice Jackson temporarily froze the district court's ruling?

Via "One First," me on what's going on—and why I think Jackson's move was savvy, notwithstanding the awful circumstances that forced it:

190. SNAP WTF?
A very quick explainer on what (and why) Justice Jackson issued an "administrative stay" in the SNAP case late on Friday night, and on what's likely to happen next

people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

SNAP has existed for 60 years. Benefits have gone out every single month over those six decades, including during government shutdowns. Until now.

Make no mistake: The money is available to fund SNAP during this shutdown. Trump is making a choice to withhold it.

Don’t forget this.

The irony is that a century ago, the exact same kind of religious bigotry that Cuomo’s embraced down the stretch — we can’t elect someone from that faith or they’ll impose it on all of us! — was aimed squarely at Catholics like Cuomo.
Boy Mamdani's race is really a vivid reminder that anti-Islamic bigotry is 100% accepted in US public discourse. People don't even bother dog whistling, it's just right out in the open.

This may be the most insane of these videos I’ve ever seen. There is no other way to describe what happened here other than that they hit a law-abiding citizen’s car and then arrested her because they were frustrated by other people and she was Hispanic.
Immigration agents crashed into a U.S. citizen on her way to work—then dragged her out of her car and arrested her.

Her family couldn’t find her for hours.
She was later released without charges.

Following Cheney's death, the oldest members of the set of current/former US presidents/VPs are Biden and Trump. The others are all younger: G. W. Bush, Clinton, Quayle, Gore, Pence, Obama, Harris, and Vance (in that order by age).

So Dems just need to Make More City. And luckily, they have the power to do that! They govern almost all the cities, so they can pass policies to infill, build up, add transit, add multi-modal transportation, etc. etc. Where they govern states, they can pass state-level laws to upzone everywhere.

So, ok, that's the premise: denser areas vote bluer, less dense areas vote redder. And it's pretty much a linear, one-to-one correlation: denser = bluer.

All right, so, we don't know much about how to make more Dems, but we know this: more dense areas, more Dems.

There's a significant chance that within the next few hours Hurricane Melissa will break the 1935 record for most intense Atlantic hurricane at landfall by barometric pressure. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... and www.nhc.noaa.gov

Hurricane Melissa (south of and heading towards Jamaica) is a Category 5 hurricane, and now at the point where "The NOAA aircraft left the storm early after experiencing severe turbulence in the southwestern eyewall."

Cannot express enough appreciation for the teams *flying through a hurricane* while not being paid.
NOAA hurricane hunters flying aboard a P-3 Orion aircraft ("Kermit") are monitoring Hurricane Melissa as most aircraft steer clear. The storm poses a catastrophic threat to Jamaica and Haiti.

The crew are among the many federal workers working without pay during the US government shutdown.
