Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

What you have to know is this … I had an Irish friend and we drove to Glastonbury one year. She’d been driving in Ireland for years. After we left London she had to stop and I had to do all the driving as she just couldn’t get her head around the speed limits

And it isn’t necessarily the person who is messaging me that’s the worst. It’s the people - like him- who think I should engage with him because he’s prominent in beer. Well, if he’s so prominent why does he spend his time sending DMs to me?

These DMs might be well meaning and it might be a cause I’m allied with but would you demand a meeting the time from my contemporaries? I’m more than happy to represent unheard voices but a lot of these hassling messages are about consumer (at best) rather than societal issues which is my domain

Forcing people who want to open pubs to pay over the odds to zombie local news outlets to publicise their licence applications does not support pubs, it supports the corporate owners of zombie news outlets.
