A while back they had a release that accidentally exposed the label applied by the ranking algo. Best I could tell Discover is a combination of both: a selection of topic-oriented potpourri sprinkled with a dash of random content from accounts at the edges of your social graph

Honest response: It's hard to say without knowing what sort of content gets labeled under each category. For example: does Journalism refer to the profession vs. the post authors' job title/affiliation vs. posts about the role of news media vs. something else
