Hello, new followers! Nice to have you. I am a NTT prof working on early modern and canon critical philosophy. I post on academia, unions/labor, parenting, music, & more. I currently work on Blaise Pascal and his philosopher sister Jacqueline Pascal. If you’re interested, I made a little thread.
I spend nearly 15% of my income on medical costs even with “good insurance.” No one in the family has cancer or was in a severe accident… just meds and going to doctors.

I can’t even imagine what someone with no insurance, or whose ACA premiums are jumping, are paying.
Politico on the rising number of Americans facing catastrophic medical insurance costs: "The Trump economy is not focusing on the root causes of why health care costs are so high in this country."
Americans are buckling under medical bills. It could get worse.
Charities that help people pay for care say demand is way up. That’s before scheduled Medicaid and Obamacare cuts take effect.

Any money that doesn’t go to salaries typically just goes to the owners who certainly aren’t there on the rink/field/court earning it. Whether it’s a service job or professional sports, we have always seen that giving owners more money almost never results in investing further into their business.
Can hockey fans fucking chill, there is no salary cap in baseball and most importantly, it is not your fucking money

“You don’t need a living wage.”

“Why aren’t people buying more consumer electronics?”
stupid young people, stop buying a new phone every year if you don't want to be broke. wait no, not like that.

Here on out I’m going to refer to APA as PhilosophyCon.

As part of the programming for the 2016 the International Leibniz Society Congress someone DID show up in Leibniz cosplay so… just saying.

Increased efficiency boosts profits like never before. But the result is never to benefit workers with higher pay pay, shorter work days/weeks, retaining jobs.

We are producing more than ever with higher profits than ever… but also working harder, longer, and for less.
Tyson is closing a Nebraska plant that employs 3,200 workers in order to “right-size” its business.

The meatpacking giant paid its CEO $22.7M last year, 525x its median employee's pay.

It also spent $196M in stock buybacks to reward shareholders.

Textbook corporate greed.

Imagine knowing your platform was a playground for predators, fueling teen depression, eating disorders, and suicide and deciding the best course of action was… absolutely nothing. Meta didn’t just “miss” anything.

The entire US economy is propped up by a product so toxic and insidious that everyone has to go on a weekly scavenger hunt just to remove it from products they're already using.
heads up, gmail has a new setting automatically on that allows their a*i to be trained on your emails so make sure to turn off the 'Smart Feature' checkbox in your settings

I keep getting alumni fundraising letters in the mail from Princeton Seminary.

The problem is that I never attended Princeton Seminary. I applied there 16 years ago, but was rejected.

Leave it to a philosophy major to drop sui generis on major network TV. Philosophers are such neeeerds.
completely outside of politics, this is so charming

Extremely upset that a throw-away XKCD joke somehow became the organizing principle for the Internet.

The issue with Prop 50, etc is it still treats politics like football. Rather than organizing/participating, vote for your favorite team & hope they win on TV. Redistricting is a top down solution that still leaves dems beholden to polls, consultants, & money—not the people. We must save ourselves.

If you’re looking for me, I’ll be the one banging my head against the wall for the next three years.

Hopefully this is wrong (it probably isn’t) but at least it is a few years out.

Starbucks needs to pull it together and bargain in good faith with their workers. I’m boycotting in solidarity but if I can’t get coffee at airports I’m going to get crabby real quickly. In fact I’m crabby just thinking about it. Do the right thing, SBUX!

Also, economic justice is important.

Fascinating that the yearning for the 1950s is always “white men get to say and do whatever they want without accountability” and never wealth equality.
it's fascinating that you can see when exactly the Reagan revolution happened

In the Great Recession shareholders asked Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz to cut health benefits for pt workers. He said they were welcome to sell their stocks. Years ago I put in 12 years with Starbucks. I began as a barista, and by the end had managed 5 stores and was a trainer for central FL. 🧵
