I think he felt slighted. For years SBUX gave full benefits to all workers and above market pay. In his mind, they were ungrateful. But he was like the well meaning great aunt who gives you a quarter and says buy something nice. 2015 wages don’t cut it in 2025, but he’d grown rich and didn’t see it.

You make a fair point. But the history is important: mobile orders grew sales but no extra labor was given to meet demand. Adding jobs will just meet growth. For pay, wages are stagnant but executive salaries grew. Shouldn’t they both grow?

I made a thread that might be food (coffee?) for thought:
In the Great Recession shareholders asked Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz to cut health benefits for pt workers. He said they were welcome to sell their stocks. Years ago I put in 12 years with Starbucks. I began as a barista, and by the end had managed 5 stores and was a trainer for central FL. 🧵

Glad someone is picking up slack!

All that to say, despite my loathing of late stage capitalism, years ago Starbucks was a breath of fresh air: less exploitative than most and with much more self awareness. I hope they find leadership that can restore their soul.

That’s a long way of saying: I stand in solidarity with the union. ✊

It is sad to see Starbucks now. My years there was invaluable for personal/professional development. I met, worked for, and employed amazing people and materially benefited even as a barista. But wealth distorts reality.

But as time goes on, he became wealthier and further out of touch with worker needs. Stagnant wages and increased work squeezed workers from both ends. Schultz felt slighted: he was giving them so much! But this was from a 20 year old perspective. Wealth put him absolutely out of touch.

Store unions grew and Howard Schultz launched an ugly union busting campaign. What happened? Other lefties can yell at me but I think Schultz came from a good place. Rags to riches always has a catch, but he grew up poor. He lived poverty and felt broken healthcare. This was formative in how he led.
