I haven’t been on in a while, needless to say a lot going on personally (moving to another state, starting a new job), so haven’t had the bandwidth for writing and posting. Hopefully in the coming weeks I’ll be freed up for November and can work on my book!

Back home for two days, then off again.

It's been over a dozen years but every now and then I think about how my 11th grade English teacher told me I couldn't submit my short story for an assignment cause the story took place over like 6 months. She said short stories can only take place in a short period of time, like a few hours.

Friendly reminder that when folks say that you "have" to follow specific writing advice, you do not, in fact, have to.

What they are sharing is what works for them, and while it might be useful, there is no one way to get your writing out into the world. Do what works for you.

This! It’s the journey that I love. I generally have a loose idea but I iron that out as I write. I let the characters tell me where to go, and I follow them. (Of course, the ending was the first thing I wrote for Hunger but it was more divine inspiration that anything)

I once saw advice that would grind my writing to a halt if I followed it. They said that 'you have to know the ending of the story at the start' and that would be impossible to me. I'd lose interest. I need to solve the mystery. I write as my interest arrives and then edit it together layer by layer

Does anyone have any good tips on where to start? I’m thinking about writing something <4k words to attach as a way to thank people for subscribing? It would mostly just be me talking about the work I’ve done, my plans, and anything exciting that happens writing-wise (and maybe pictures of my dog)

I’ve been thinking about doing a newsletter, but I really have no idea where to start, but I would like to start doing something maybe monthly? It would be like this, but much more compact and thought-out. (These are very much so not).

But! I’ve been doing a deep rework/rewrite and I wrote a whole 4k words of backstory in the beginning, before we get to the original story we wrote, and I really enjoy it. It’s sets up the MC for the rest of the story and we get a very good understanding of who he is and why he’s like the way he is.

After getting feedback and resting on it a bit, I decided a while ago to do a full rewrite of The Bay. There were character backstories that were nonexistent and the pacing was just awful. It was my first short in a while, so it’s to be expected!

I’ve had a pretty productive day. I got the website up and running (it’s primitive but it works! dallasfinch.net), I got some revisions done on the new rough draft of The Bay, about to get some more writing done.

Been working on getting some chores done today, then I’m hopping into writing!

I got 1.8k words on The Bay yesterday night. Doing a full rewrite, but I should be done before the end of the month for sure.

Since I’ve not been writing much, decided to get calendars set up and a reminder kanban up and running for all of my writing. Going to try it out, see how it goes. I may have over-scheduled myself but I’m learning!
