The Ottoman Empire literally took it jews persecuted in Spain and Portugal, what are you yapping about. They even allowed major cities like Thessaloniki to become jewish majority. Jews belong to their countries. Morrocan jews belong in Morocco, Palestinian jews beling in Palestine.

Until the 21st century my US state would give you an official ID if you produced a utility bill and proof of residence with the same name and address.

I think a lot of people don't quite grasp how little documentation of a legal identity anyone had before, like, the 1930s. No social security number, no green card, no driver's license. This made you reliant on your social network; OTOH nobody could force you to write your name a certain way.
