Voodoo and Black Messiah are incredible records. They synthesize the history of American music (especially, but not only, Black music) into something singular and individual. They feel like labors of love and awe. It’s like D’Angelo saying, “Isn’t this beautiful? Isn’t it amazing and fun?” It is.
