I guess no matter what social media platform is developed, and no matter how hard they try to make it a friendly and safe place, there will always be an element of humanity that logs in with "Can you believe the horrible shit going on the place we just escaped?" providing screengrabs and videos.

They used to call it “green ink,” after British sanitariums started issuing green ink to mental patients since they could no longer bar them from corresponding with media, allowing the newspapers to immediately discard it.

Topic: spittle-flecked paranoid conspiracy theorists using LLMs to clean up their work, to submit it to Bellingcat with a veneer of "calm and collected."
The bigger change is presentation, historically, these emails were visually chaotic: sudden colour changes, ALL CAPS, screenshots pasted at random. Classic signs of disordered thinking. Now they’re neat, structured, and grammatically consistent. The delusion hasn't changed, but the formatting has.

A new skill-sharing "community" is starting up in my city, based on a Dutch model of preserving culture. I've donated to them, volunteered my skills. I really wanted to be a part of this, leaning into the crafts tied to my Scandi heritage.

Did I forget there'd be Minnesotans there?

"Yes, my child, and so will I."

"That's what you're charging me $400 for?"

Note: The Coast Guard did not reclassify them as hate symbols.

The Coast Guard reclassified them as "potentially divisive" and may be displayed in public if they don't compromise unit cohesion, mission strength, &c.
Behind this important reversal is a member of the Coast Guard who saw what was happening and had the courage to leak it to the press. That person deserves serious praise.

For anyone wondering, some possible dog names have survived from cuneiform sources.

On tiny dog figurines found buried under a palace in Nineveh, Iraq are inscriptions that seem to be names.

dan rigiššu “loud is his bark”

munaššiku gārîšu “biter of his foe”

mušēṣi lemnūti “expeller of evil”

A simple mnemonic for remembering year placement:

"B"C comes "before"
"A"D goes "after"

The rule is the opposite of this. #AmEditing

Cracks me up, how people will quote-post an image file with text in it, and their quote is all the text in the image, which adds nothing at all to the presented information. Yet they staunchly refuse to condescend to alt-text, which is exactly where that transcription should go. #HumanCondition

A favorite #AmEditing exercise is breaking someone's one-sentence paragraph into three logically paced and cumulative sentences. I don't always know the subject matter, but I like a quick dive into the topic, and it's satisfying to spread it out so the reader doesn't have to hold their breath.

Who knew my pop culture knowledge and twisted sense of humor would pay off in a professional context?

Nah, no. I've thought about it, and no.

If you want to block people you don't know from commenting on your post, fine, but that should go along with a block on anyone reposting you.

I am shooting my shot.

I love writing op-eds.

@teenvogue.com was my main outlet, but if there are any others (especially independently ran) that are looking for a contributing writer on race, gender, and the economy, I'd love to work with you.

#AmEditing question.

As an editor, what is one thing you must absolutely never, ever, under any circumstances get wrong?

Because I'm frustrated at how many times I've misspelled my own name. Even three times a year is too much, and autocorrect doesn't even enter into it.

I get butterflies in my stomach whenever I try to tell a lepidopterist joke.
I don't have the words to make linguistic jokes.
