I bought this (my first) recording of Porgy and Bess back in high school. Leontyne Price is the reason I originally thought “Summertime” was a Bess song. Still one of my favorites.

I played the baritone horn in my middle school band and always fantasized that we would magically gain strings, synth, a drum set, and talent to do Mannheim Steamroller’s rendition of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen for our holiday concert. Ofc I would have taken over the French horn’s lead 😋😂

It’s a weird combination of confidence and vulnerability that brings such a weird fucking tension to the song and is the key to the buildup and release in the chorus. It’s perfect
Britney Spears has a singular pop voice; a mix of R&B balladeer & bravado. she nails a vocal run while inhabiting an exact persona. what she lacks in trained power she more than makes up for in personality. her biggest strength is performance and she deserves more credit for her vocals. the end.
