I know myself well enough and care enough about animals’ comfort and welfare to know I shouldn’t have a longhair cat but I keep thinking how cute it would be for Widget to have a longhaired orange sidekick named Calcifer

The breathtaking, audacious confidence of this passage…

You’re telling me you came up in political journalism of the 2010s and 20s and *never once* worried about job security? Really???

That’s… diagnosable.

Ok so. I would drink the Santa oil. Some people have said they would not. I also assume you get special Santa powers from it, but can not verify that unless you let me drink the Santa oil. Please let me drink the Santa oil. How about you? Drinking it or not?

If it hasn't been said, I'll say it: No woman of color would ever be defended in this "she's just a smol bean" fashion & many Black, Latina, Asian & Indigenous women have had their lives & careers destroyed for nothing, or for far, far less. Same goes for trans women. These are just fucking facts.
Possibly the only thing more freakish than Nuzzi's prose is the contortions her defenders twist themselves into. "She's not just hot, but she definitely is hot, while also being a vulnerable smol child. Also, criticizing her is sexist."

a point I feel the need to make about regulation, generally: it’s not that companies will automatically follow the law or that regulatory penalties can always be greater than the benefit of acting illegally

it’s that making something illegal gives employees a greater chance of refusing to do it

Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.

That is a goddamn MUPPET.
This picture has been making the rounds again, and is being misidentified again.

This is a GOOSEFISH.

This is NOT a tasselled wobbegong shark.

It’s a great pic. I get why people are very excited about it. But it’s as easy to give it the right name as the wrong one.

"AI companies will be paid a portion of the savings from claims they deny or, as the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction plan puts it, “compensated based on a share of averted expenditures.”"
Thousands of Washington state Medicare users could soon have claims denied by AI
Starting Jan. 1, traditional Medicare recipients in Washington state will face a new hurdle to get certain procedures covered — private AI companies that get paid based on how many claims they deny.
