I'm noodling on the next Wicked Problems Collaborative project, so it feels like a good time to create a starter pack. It's been a huge honor to collaborate with this crew - so many great people who are trying to make things better.

Ahmed al Ahmed, a Lebanese Muslim who owns a Sydney fruit shop, risked his life to disarm one of the Bondi Beach shooters.

His courage gives me hope amidst the horror and darkness. Muslims and Jews are not enemies. Our futures, in the Middle East and beyond, are intrinsically bound.

A true hero.

But also, I feel like lists like these don't address how much slower tech moved because of how much more expensive it was. Like 8 track players were short lived but I used one in the 90s because my parents were cheap as fuck

I have taught in Thailand for the last decade and this has never crossed my mind.
Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

Those who are truly exceptional should demand the opportunity.
Let’s replicate this a few hundred times to establish a baseline.
Michael C. Rockefeller got shipwrecked in 1963, washed up on an island, and was promptly eaten by cannibals.

Bridge out ahead in the land of paycheck-to-paycheck
It's a lot of people, it's not small change, and it sure sounds like a lot of people who let mail pile up because holidays are going to find themselves in surprise overdraft come January
This is not going to go well for the GOP. I really don't think they comprehend how large this is.

Parenting, politics, and cleaning up after I cook
One of the most frustrating things about both parenting and politics is that it takes at least ten times longer to clean up a mess than to make the mess in the first place.

I'm thinking about the time in the pandemic when people were starting to realize the value of those who kept necessities going (& the lack of some others), just before everything was rushed to reopen. I wonder if we'll get a similar knee-jerk to prop up our extortionate insurance-based system.
I'm really beginning to think that GOP legislators are not just indifferent to but actively detached from median consumer reality.

Their attitude has always been "fuck 'em," but I don't think they grasp the degree to which they're immediately fucking people, and the impact it will have
I do not understand why no one is talking about how much money is going to suddenly be missing from the consumer economy in starting in January. This is one of my...Am I Crazy....moments. Money sunk into higher insurance payments will not be spent on consumer goods, and this will happen quickly.
