We’ve seen an unconfirmed report, from his cousin, that ABC and Thames announcer Philip Elsmore died on 3 August at the age of 87.

The death of multi-camera TV: a thread. I know most of you will know the technical parts of this (and may have read it in the other place) but bear with me. 1/ 🧵

Boss, we’ve got a problem. Users don’t want this stuff! They keep wanting to turn it off, even when we keep turning it back on!

Terry Scott's 1962 record "My Brother" opens with a "Phwoah".

He must have done it on telly at some point by 1972.

BBC News explain that because of Brexit, Brits will be photographed and have their fingerprints taken when going into the EU, as the UK now is a third country

BBC News forget to explain that the UK helped create these rules when we were part of the EU because we wanted stronger border control

FACT OF THE DAY. 12 October 1984. Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher survived an assassination attempt when an IRA time bomb exploded at the Grand Hotel, Brighton, during the period of the annual Conservative Party Conference.

Unexpected rabbit hole today is discovering that "Phwoar!" was first recorded by the dictionary in 1976, and 1972's Carry On Matron may be its first film appearance.

I thought I'd found an earlier 60s TV use, but it seems "Phwoar!" is firmly a 70s phenomenon.

By popular demand, more of Nicholas Ball's mad Pop Art house interior. He's an advertising executive, you know.
The pilchard bed with becking hand Front room with Leyland Mini drinks cabinet, ships figurehead and Alan Jones-esque naked lady S+M mannequin. They have two young children. Kitchen, with red and green colour scheme and a table made to look like a giant box of matches. Mood lighting in the sunken linge area. White sofas and red plastic eggcup chairs all round.

The Crezz - Thames's expensive and doomed attempt to create a middle class soap, covering the doings of the residents of a Kensington crescent who all have frightfully fancy interior design.

The Crezz Isla Blair's frightfully chic split level chrome and glass pad. Nicholas Ball sleeps in his postmodern pilchard tin bed. The token gay couple's Italian restaurant-style abode.

This is all great and everything but to be honest I'd rather they just removed their consistently rubbish AI drivel from the top of the results page. I am fed up with being force-fed answers that are incomplete at best and outright lies more often than not.

Curious film this. Tremendously innocent. Seen it a few times.

From the FT:
“UK consumers have curbed spending more than anywhere else in the G7 since the pandemic…
Since the start of the Covid pandemic in 2020, UK household spending has risen just 1 per cent in real terms and fallen 3 per cent on a per capita basis.”
