I have a query from a colleague looking for someone who can talk theology and politics in US Catholicism, and no names are springing immediately to mind. Any suggestions?

Forty years ago today, Calvin & Hobbes was first published. It's all fabulous but, as time went on, Bill Watterson decided he was going to make his Sunday pages the most gorgeous, creative, and varied of all. This is one of my favourites, partly for the use of the looooong final panel.

Mega-church styled American Pentecostalism is almost entirely an attempt to occupy the corner of the market which offers a religious and individualistic psychological therapeutic, complete with technologies of optimization designed for appropriating conservative and reactionary ideologies.
Not to go full Adorno here, but I feel it's part of the issue with contemporary evangelical/non-denominational/Pentecostal Christianity essentially turning a commodity: the amount of Christian AI slop and kitsch on YouTube is the other side of this, and it comes from the same impulse.
There's something just so vulgar about modern evangelical megachurches.

These circumlocutions are absolutely disgusting. Gaetz, a sitting member of Congress, exploited and raped a homeless teenager. THAT’S THE HEADLINE.
A teenager in Florida with a homeless parent wanted money for braces and ended up having sex for money with powerful men, setting off a chain of events that would have a dramatic impact on her life and help upend the political career of Representative Matt Gaetz. nyti.ms/49PSkL9

It’s really exceptional. There are like four or five different languages throughout the album?
ROSALÍA's LUX is not just the album of the year; it might be the album of the decade. It's jaw-dropping.

Anyway if you're a very sharp analyst within a particular discipline/policy domain, then becoming successful and subsequently succumbing to the temptation of all-purpose punditry is one of the most dangerous roads to damnation.

Speaker Johnson is officially keeping the House in recess again next week. This will be the eighth consecutive week the House has been out of session. The chamber hasn't met since Sept. 19. Adelita Grijalva, who was elected on Sept. 23, has not been sworn in.

Yes. The response to “We are so divided!” is “Yes, yes we are. And given the choices of some of our coreligionists, we better be.”

I’m not sure anyone is doing public philosophy quite as effectively as Botton’s the School of Life—quibbles about oversimplification and certain ideological commitments aside, which are always going to be trade-offs when doing practical philosophy for non-expert public consumption.
