lol great point

along those same lines, I love how Jaffer's signs have a spray-painted aesthetic, given that he probably wants to throw any tagger in jail for 10 - 20

Tim Cartmell's bad-faith ego play to gain power is failing (an anecdote):

I spoke to a volunteer from his campaign, and all he could talk about is that "someone is stealing our signs".

That's loser shit. Never heard a winning campaign talk about it. (Sign shenanigans happen every campaign.)

There is no free lunch when you build a city. The old policies that prioritized growth through sprawl and not infill are clearly being looked at with nostalgia at the moment. They’re also the policies that saw us build schools that we ended up closing 50-60 years later. 🤷

I proudly cast votes for Andrew Knack and Michael Janz today in ward papastew.

I so appreciate their leadership towards a sustainable Edmonton that supports and welcomes people from ALL walks of life.

"Specifically, more activity and more building stock value per linear feet of roads, pipes and sidewalks is net fiscally positive over time."

We can probably agree that @doniveson.bsky.social is an "entertainment" content provider. 😂

Still, great post about an important issue!

Great article from Iveson talking about the current infill debate.

“Bottom line: you cannot build a more cost efficient city without the density.”

It's ironic that neighbourhoods like Strathcona and wihkwentowin that ostensibly have much "less" space (still plenty) for infill are pretty much fine with it, while Capilano has vast tracks of under-utilized land and its residents think the world is ending when they see a 6-plex getting built.
conradnobert.bsky.social
The less density in a neighbourhood, the more Edmonton subsidizes you.

Capilano, then, is one of Edmonton's most-subsidized neighbourhoods. And it is strongly anti-density.

I guess it's human nature to fight to keep our subsidies, right? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Brilliant! Yes, the low price of the public systems is so great.

I mean, two wheels generally = good, but wow so many people get hurt on e-scooters. It's wild.
conradnobert.bsky.social
Nice! I've used it in Montreal and Boston too. Loved it. And like $150/year or whatever it costs is another level than $7 for one ride for a scooter.

No scooter clutter, safer than scooters, very affordable, parking racks are place-making.

This style of shared mobility is primo, and I would love to have access to one in Edmonton someday.

This is not to excuse the driver, but the reason why we are even watching this video and why it’s not a fatality is because Airdrie has a city wide 30km/h speed limit.

30km/h has an significantly lower fatality risk in driver vs walker collisions.

Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

Edmonton Election: Municipal parties, explained
Oct. 20 will mark the end of Alberta's pilot project in which both Edmonton and Calgary were allowed to create municipal parties during campaign season.

One thing I always pay attention to regarding any campaign is, how many young people is it attracting?

I want to support people who open up opportunities for the next generation.

Canadians: “We the north! I love hockey, skiing, and taking my kids sledding. Did you hear about a light dusting of snow shutting down some southern US city?”

it’s possible to bike past September: “but what if I get… cold?”

This is not at all surprising for anyone who thinks we can move differently within cities in the future. Ebikes in particular are changing the entire conversation. The reflexive rejection of using a bike for things we use cars for is getting less convincing.

That bridge that they have in the plans to connect you from the Mac to the other side of the stroad would be pretty sweet.

Good luck to us getting it funded though.

Downtown Edmonton is dead, wow, I can only wonder why 🤔 "But a bike lane would take away a traffic lane" shut your goddamn mouth. #yeg
One of the entrances to The Edmonton City Centre with a massive road cutting through it. Another massive road cutting through the heart of downtown Edmonton An ludicrous road right beside an active stadium with high pedestrian traffic during events. Another massive road right beside a university no less.

I'll let you know after the municipal election. 😉

And, if we're sub-tweeting the ex-mayor like I think we are, IMO it's also an ego play. "It's so much worse than when I, the perfect mayor, was running things."
