Advanced voting opens for the 2025 municipal election today.

As voters start deciding who to trust, we will be supporting candidates who care about what really matters: safer streets, fair taxes, and healthy communities.

Will you help?

Now that this weekend's memorial ride is over, we have two other large group rides we want to share!
1. Vintage Ride in Tweed: Oct 18 at 11:30. It'll be fancy and it will be a lot of fun!
2. Critical Mass: Nov 1 at 5:30. Dress up as we celebrate Halloween and Day of the Dead!

None of these have as big of an impact as government policy, large corporations, or people using private jets, however, if we don't each take the small actions we control then bigger impacts are harder to achieve.

Everyone one of us needs to take practical steps that work within our constraints.
yegbike.bsky.social
Of course, stacking these will have bigger impacts, especially over time as they become second nature!
yegbike.bsky.social
5. Doing anything less, like driving, can be hard to establish as a habit. It gets easier over time, but the realities of life are many and reoccuring. Same thing applies to doing good things more, like taking transit, walking, or biking.
yegbike.bsky.social
4. Energy efficient renovations might make a large impact, especially in a place like Edmonton with our hot summers and cold winters, but the biggest impact of those renovations come from technology that's not always readily available here, like heat pumps. New homes make that delta small for some.
yegbike.bsky.social
3. Most of the other items on this list do not have guaranteed positive outcomes. For example, eating less meat doesn't mean one less cow gets raised and slaughtered, though if you don't buy the meat it could end up as waste. Eating less meat is good, but it takes suppliers time to adapt.
yegbike.bsky.social
2. Not having a car makes travelling by car less convenient. Even the best of intentions have to deal with the reality that daily life is busy, and sometimes it's just a lot easier to hop in your car and get some errand done. It's still possible, since rentals, taxi's, and car share exist.
yegbike.bsky.social
1. Every time you travel without a car, you are reducing the amount of environmental damage you do. All other modes are less harmful for travelling around your city. This is also true of air travel, but most people fly less often than they drive.

Why is going car-free so impactful?

A 🧵

Ok, since many people are obviously not reading the article, here's a pertinent figure from it showing the top actions to reduce emissions.
A horizontal bar chart titled “19 climate-friendly choices, ranked” shows actions individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprint, ordered from most to least impactful. The x-axis represents projected impact in tons of CO₂ equivalent per capita per year (tCO₂e/cap/yr), ranging from 0 to about 2.5. Each action is color-coded by sector: transportation (blue), energy (orange), and food (green).

Go car-free – highest impact (blue bar extending to about 2.5 tCO₂e).

Fly less (blue, about 1.5).

Shift to renewable home energy (orange, about 1.4).

Switch to EV or hybrid car (blue, about 1.2).

Go vegan (green, about 1.0).

Walk, bike, or take transit more (blue).

Make energy-efficient renovations (orange).

Use clean cooking equipment (orange).

Go vegetarian (green).

Shift driving habits (e.g., carpooling) (blue).

Increase telecommuting (blue).

Shift to regional/seasonal diet (green).

Move to energy-efficient home (orange).

Decrease food waste (green).

Eat less meat (green).

Use less energy at home (orange).

Reduce packaged food, dining out (green).

Use energy-efficient appliances (orange).

Compost – least impact (green, under 0.1).

A note clarifies that these are meta-analytic estimates of greenhouse gas reduction potentials, drawn from 659 estimates across 47 academic journal articles. The average person emits 6.28 tonnes of CO₂e per year, though this varies widely by income and country. Wealthier populations may emit up to 110 tonnes per year, while lower-income populations may emit as little as 1.6 tonnes.

A small positive thing about the teachers' strike/lockout is the effect on traffic on our street, alley & parking lot. A brief reprieve from parents driving SUVs ferrying kids to & from school, blocking our driveway, shortcutting through our lot, & being belligerent when asked politely to stop.

This chart doesn't say "don't wear PPE", it says PPE is the least effective control in a system of more effective safety controls and a culture of safety.

For the first time, the avg new car costs >$50,000. www.cnbc.com/2025/10/13/n...

It's making more and more sense for families to use a relatively cheap e-bike or golf cart in lieu of a 2nd or 3rd car. Detroit should be nervous.
Why car companies should fear the golf cart
Automakers are churning out vehicles that are bigger and more expensive—but that might soon reach a breaking point.

it happened again, so it’s time for a reminder:

Drivers, please do not wave pedestrians and cyclists into situations on the road when they do not have the right way. I know it feels like the polite thing to do, but it is incredibly dangerous

It often feels like the failure is intentional. So much potential in #yeg, but we build the wrong thing, often in the wrong place, which perpetuates the narrative that 'no one uses them'.

We can do better! It starts by voting for better on Oct 20th.

I just got back from a trip to The Netherlands. You can't visit there and come away thinking bike lanes don't work. They don't work here because we set them up to fail.

The “weather” excuse is extensively covered in this latest NJB video.

Can totally relate with Canadian’s quoting windchill like it’s the actual temp. I hear it all the time and it’s so annoying!🙄

One of the few things Toronto got right is Bike Share Toronto. It has grown from 80 stations in 2011 to almost 1000, while this July, August, and September each saw more than one million rides! Now if only infrastructure could keep up ... #BikeTO #TOpoli #VisionZero www.thestar.com/news/gta/how...

Good turn out for the Cranksgiving ride, even as Autumn arrived with 0°C temps. The ride was in memory of Dr. Darren Markland and he rode in all weather. He’d have approved the riding with friends and helping the less fortunate at the same time

Just saw a car ad that tried to sell being stuck in traffic as quality family time. I’ve never felt more sure that we’re near the collapse of car culture.
