bay arean, librarian, & flutist in wisconsin • #DHmakes • ex-WNBA quiz writer • they/them • 🇭🇹🏳️‍🌈
my “journalism” “career” started just like this and lasted from 2012 to 2021 and the bookends of graduating from college into all that and COVID were pretty perfect, almost scripted
It does feel like we're in a repeat of the post-recession media world — a moment when journalists who expected/needed to get paid found it impossible to find work but hundreds of new writers (including me) found their footing *by writing for free* (I hate this scenario even if it was my entry point)

In case you were worried women's hockey has gotten too advanced, let me remind you today is the first time three Black women have been on the ice together at the Olympics. Canada's Sarah Nurse and Sophie Jaques plus USAH's first-ever Black women Laila Edwards

I love her and I think sometimes she doesn’t need to make the extra pass and should in fact shoot the puck

I was among the layoffs at The Washington Post today. It has been an absolute dream to be a small part of this incredible team. Covering the Caps has been an honor; being a beat writer is an all-consuming thing that I love deeply. I hope I’ll get to continue that in whatever is next

I was among the many sports reporters laid off by The Washington Post today. Feeling a lot of gratitude for my time working for this paper.

Not looking back. Looking ahead to what’s next!

I was laid off by The Washington Post today. This is gutting for our readers and our section, but I’m grateful for the 4 years I had to cover sports alongside friends and legends.

Want to make a zine in 2026 as a goal? You could start w/a quick+handwritten minizines: only 6 tiny (4.25"x2.25") pages to fill + a cover + back cover (I usually fill w/credit/sharing info). See prompts from thatclowngoddess.bsky.social's Zine Idea Generator or check out @cms.bsky.social's zines!

my 32-year-old body decided a weighted blanket was too much heavy lifting and I threw out my back
What's the most ridiculous way you ever hurt yourself? I got out of the tub, skidded in water and tripped over the toilet. Ankle sprain.

😅

I resolved to make more quick/unserious zines in 2026, so here's one:

"notes app apologies," a collection of lines I jotted down in my phone notes last year that did not go anywhere (but still might be something). if you will, it's like a micro-chap but totally unedited! #DHmakes

welp, that’s 365 letters in 365 days
wrote letter #300 today and starting to reflect on what it'll be like in 2026 to not be thinking about a different person in depth every day
I’m still doing this btw! and now that we’re somehow in the last third of the year, I’m thinking about how I’m going to write about this experience, the (digital) data I *did* keep and why, etc. 👀 #DHmakes

the product is great, and the community makes it for me

I was a sportswriter for several years, and when I burned out (followed closely by leaving twitter before most others), I felt like I’d lost all my people

now I have a beautiful and supportive new discord server of sports fans I can yap to 🥹
I've shared some real talk on what it's been like since leaving Substack and how you can help. This newsletter is not AI slop and it is written by a human (me!), and I pay other people to help me create the product you receive in your inbox on a regular basis. But I can't do it without you!
it's time for some real talk

can’t believe people would use genAI to write emails when what really gives sending emails the juice is spending ten minutes agonizing over word choice, hitting send, and realizing you used “I’d be happy to…” twice in a row anyway
