if it won’t do what’s right to keep its own people safe at work, how can you trust it to tell you how to protect yourself at yours, and to demand better of your government?

i loved my job. and i still i believe in the public broadcaster.

but you can’t compromise with COVID.

It is important to understand that the reckoning on Covid is not about feels, it’s not about fears, and it’s not about fuzzy ideas of social justice.

It is real people being forced out of their jobs because their workplaces refuse to acknowledge the scientifically proved risks of Covid.

I think it was 2 yrs ago when Gloria Macarenko returned to work in September saying she'd had a lovely trip to the UK but had brought Covid back with her on the plane, so, haha, that was a downer. I could hear her coworker coughing in the background. Then she took more days off because... still sick

A few years into it all, as we remained Covid safe, my husband got sick... & sicker and sicker. Finally, he was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and put on immunosuppressants. And we were already living as he now needed us to do to stay alive. You, your wife, us... we are on the right side of history.

and that’s how the CBC has not only failed me and the rest of its employees, it has also failed you and the rest of canadians.

it has failed to protect us and our families from the real harms of COVID. and it has failed to adequately inform you and all canadians of the risks of this disease.

this is known science. what is still unknown is the cumulative impact of dozens of COVID infections over a lifetime.

but on most days, that’s not the messaging you hear on CBC or other legacy media. the quirks episode was an exception, not the norm.

for the most part, it’s business as usual.

after the broadcast, my partner emailed a group of CBC managers and union reps to ask—in light of the quirks & quarks coverage—why it was OK to force us back to the office with no mitigations, especially when our son was too young to be vaccinated.

several months later, she received this reply:

Throughout the pandemic, our COVID guidelines and protocols were based on Health Canada and local public health guidelines at any given time, including return to work protocols. These were our minimum standards and at times we went
above them.

Quirks & Quarks is editorially independent from CBC management and has covered COVID in a number of different ways over the past few years, including the story you heard in March.
