every so often, reddit is like "do you want to see a solo/new/inexperienced dev asking for help with their massively overscoped rpg/action/online multiplayer game". stop asking. clearly i do.
damn, these are beautiful!

About this second principle, which is VERY important:

I often find myself designing and tweaking to pre-empt the complaints that I have internalised after years of community management. But when you do that, you're designing for the wrong person. Design it for the sicko who gets you completely
Playtesting Is Play is one I bang on about a lot but that’s maybe not so obviously applicable. Maybe “Don’t make the game for people who won’t like it”. Call it “sickos only” or “every game it’s player”.
What's your number one personal game design principle? And even better - does it have a cool name?
early on, i got up the courage to ask my boss to use this method, and it saved me so much stress over the years
"lots of marines have skull and crossbones tattoos so i didn't think anything of it" is definitely something you say amidst multiple studies sounding the alarm on white nationalism in the armed forces in the us and canada haha wow

acing my rorschach tests because i can name every little guy on those cards. that's inside out spongebob. cyclops bart simpson. soft serve smaug. clearly tall tamagotchi. that's my mom
i need my girlies to make the lestat fancams set to "killed by br8k spider"
if we think of lestat, through the lens of vriska, what do we learn?

(this is very good framing!!)
Wow we’re having “games are art” discourse again! Just gonna leave this here.

From my dissertation:
sometimes it does! sometimes it's an exercise in frustration prototyping a bare bones loop, and reminding people testing that I am one person with limited coding skills, and can't make the physics/mechanics/heavily art based thing they seem to want
am i stupid? is the person playing my game stupid? is the game engine stupid? some combination of all of the above? let's spin the wheel and find out.
sometimes being a solo dev is the pits. not because of the usual challenges (though there are those too!) but because if you've got perfectionist or people pleasing traits, it becomes really hard to judge when you need to stand on your convictions and when feedback is correct
an embarrassing number of game ideas for me start from seeing an unhinged tweet or tumblr post
is my cat a) burying his food for later b) carrying a toy in his mouth when he decides he's hungry or c) some secret third thing
playing stadium this season in a nutshell
im not even kidding when i say i had a dream last night that i was talking to hazard overwatch and this was my view and then he smothered me
i've seen lola rennt like 5 times, and i only realized tonight that the man in the ambulance is the security guard
