“Don’t let management hear you say that,” another scientist, a young man with a face that was more freckles than not, said. “Jenna got dragged in for ‘re-education’ after one of the C-suites caught her.” “Re-education isn’t a thing, Carter,” Erin scolded him. Carter looked at her suspiciously. “You haven’t seen Jenna since it happened. I haven’t seen a smile that fake since my cousin hooked up with a night puppet.” Erin tried not to make a face at that. There was nothing inherently wrong with seeking gratification with a robotic companion. In a lot of ways, it was safer than seeking out a human worker. But something about the whole concept felt…off to her. Maybe she’d just seen one too many dumped in the alleys after they’d been used too roughly. The unblinking eyes staring at her made her shiver every time. “I’m sure she’s fine,” Erin muttered, the only response she could think to give. Patricia eyed her in a way Erin couldn’t quite read the intention of. “Best just to focus on your own ass,” the older woman advised the two of them. “Save yourself the stress.” Erin and Carter nodded silently. Patricia sighed one more time. “Get to work,” she grumbled.

Erin awoke to the distinct sense that something was wrong. Her room was dark, daybreak still hours away. Nothing and no one should be up at this hour except the owls and their prey. Erin swallowed thickly as she slipped from the bed, feeling very much like the prey in that scenario, though she had no idea why. The opened her bedroom door as quietly as she could, only to find Jack standing just outside it, looking like he was moments away from opening it himself. “Jack?” she whispered, feeling that aimless dread growing heavier in her stomach. “What’s wrong?” He shushed her, finger to his lips. “Someone’s here.” Erin’s blood stopped cold in her veins. “What?” Instead of an answer, a gun was thrust into her trembling hands. That damn same handgun she’d used to threaten the conman at the bridge. That felt so long ago now. Everything always seemed to feel so far away when she tried to remember it. “Go out the back door,” Jack ordered. “Run to Marley’s. Use the wood for cover.” “What about you?” she demanded. “I’ll be right behind you. I promise.” She didn’t believe him. “Jack!” Warm lips pressed against hers, so brief that Erin almost wondered if she’d imagined it. “Go!” I didn't get to tell you," she whispered. "I said I'd tell you my wish if we made it out alive." Lightning flashed, a bolt striking the earth below like a spear from heaven. Morgan had to flinch away from its brightness. The roll of thunder that followed seemed almost apologetic, cradling her in its sound. She blinked away the spots in her eyes. For a moment, she thought before her was a trick of her eyes, her mind still clearing the burn of the light from her nerves. There, just out of reach, stood Thor. The runic ink was gone from his arms. The rain did not penetrate his clothing, nor did it weigh down his hair, somehow wilder than it had been before. His eyes glowed, electrical sparks in the same shade of blue danced over his shoulders. She lifted her hand to reach for him, taking a single step, but he beat her to it. Strong arms hoisted her up, large hands holding her aloft as if she weighed nothing. For once, she had to lean down to meet his gaze. He held her up as if she were above him. As if she was what he worshipped. When he spoke, thunder rumbled with every syllable. "Tell me, little king." Her hands trembled as she reached up to take hold of his face. His beard was soft, barely a tickle against her fingertips. "I wish you would stay." He surged up to meet her as she fell into him. Their lips met, desperate and wanting and perfect. His taste settled on her tongue, sweeter and headier than the honey wine from the feast. His sparks danced over her fingers and up her arms, sending goosebumps in their wake. Never had a shock felt so sweet. A spark clung to their lips as the broke apart, a bit of Thor's power that refused to let her go. She stared at him, clear sea teal glowing like his lightning bright blue. Their power sang together. Of course it did. He was her knight after all. "Stay," she pleaded, uncertain if the wetness that rolled own her cheeks was rain or her own tears. "Promise me you'll stay."

She waited with bated breath, eyes darting back and forth between the screen and the edge of the light where W-044 disappeared into the darkness. It wouldn’t take long to get her water. Unless this placed didn’t have any. It might not. Maybe he had to go to the car. Whatever car he’d used to haul her from the farm to wherever this is. The phone vibrated in her hands, and Erin was suddenly very grateful she kept it on silent. She stared at the screen. Three words stared back at her. ‘On our way.’ She wondered, briefly, how they could know where to go from just a text. But Chae-seo was a genius. Anthony was, too. One of them must have come up with something. ‘How long?’ she sent back. A long moment of waiting. Too long, though the clock didn’t even tick over to the next minute before the reply came through. ‘Soon.’ Erin tipped her head back against the mattress with a stuttering sigh. Vague, but just enough to give her hope. She couldn’t possibly know how soon ‘soon’ was, but Jack hadn’t gotten her this far only to let her down now. She had to believe in him, believe in the others. He and Marley were going to race each other to be the first one through the door with a gun. And Chae-seo would beat them both to the punch with her damn wrench.

Toby meowed loudly, as if scolding her for foisting the old lady next door onto him. She didn’t know what he was complaining about. Ms. Heydari gave him way more treats than she did. The lights were dim out in the hallway, the rest of the world still just waking up. The sounds of the city were starting to pick up outside as early workers settled into their routines. The smell of biodiesel hit her nose as she exited her high-rise building. She wrinkled her nose, digging into her bag for the rebreather mask that she’d forgotten to put on before leaving the building…again. She inhaled the filtered, eucalyptus-scented air with a sigh of relief. Rebreather properly in place, she hurried down the sidewalk towards the tram station. The faster she got to the lab, the sooner she didn’t have to worry about what was entering her lungs. The Sprawl – as it was affectionately and not-so-affectionally called – was a megalopolis that spanned along must of the eastern seaboard, from what was once known as New York City all the way down to the once-capital of the former United States. Well, technically it was still the capital of the United States, but what the looked like now was very different than what it did before the city was swallowed up by the Sprawl in the penultimate years of the 21st centuries. Erin supposed that’s what happened when war and natural disasters plagued a country after decades of political strife. Or, she would if she gave such things much thought. The tram station was crowded with commuters, as was typical. She gave a nod to an older gentleman in a burgundy suit that she recognized, who offered her a crinkled-eyed smile in return. “Lovely morning,” he said, voice muffled by his own rebreather. “It is,” she agreed beatifically. “What flavor are you breathing today?” “Cinnamon,” he said cheerfully. “Just got a new filter last week, so it’s still fresh. You?”

Generic November Writing Challenge 2025: Day 30 Final word count: 51,312 out of 50,000 “Let’s everyone put the weapons down,” Chae-seo said, calm but uneasy. “We don’t mean anyone any harm,” “We do if he doesn’t stop pointing his gun at Marley,” Anthony said, colder than Erin was used to hearing him be. “Winter,” Erin said sharply. “Don’t point guns at my friends.” Winter stepped back, looking at her with those damn puppy dog eyes again as he lowered his pistol. How he’d managed to go from cold, emotionless assassin to kicked puppy so easily, she didn’t know. And none of the theories that came to mind were pleasant to think about. She could feel Jack’s eyes on her before she even turned to acknowledge him. She wasn’t sure if he was angry with her or just horrified. Maybe both. Probably both. “You named the assassin that tried to kill you?” he shouted. “He asked me to!” Erin shouted back, hissing as she quickly regretted it. Who would have thought shouting would irritated a gunshot wound in your hip. She collapsed back onto the bed. “Besides, I also kiss assassins that were hired to kill me.” He glared at her. She glared back. A huff escaped him, and that was all the warning Erin got before Jack’s lips pressed against hers, sweet and relieved and unconcerned with anyone else in the room. “I’m glad you’re safe.”

I'd be able to focus on my writing without worrying about shit like where my next meal is going to come from. I might actually be able to be independent while also pursuing my dreams. You know...that American Dream everyone likes to go on about without actually making it achievable.

The thing about CrunchyRoll’s enshittification is that normally I’m a big proponent of supporting official channels but if the money from subscriptions isn’t being used to pay talent and labour and the quality suffers as a result, then morally what’s the purpose of supporting those official means?
