King, police abolition is not about defunding every department instantly. It's about a gradual process o strategically reallocating resources, funding and responsibility away from police and toward community based models of safety, support and prevention. The people who respond to crises in our community should be people who are best equipped to deal with those crisis.

Friend I want to echo that last statement and dig down a little further. Crime isn't random. Most off the time, it happens when someone has been unable to meet their basic needs through other means. By shifting money away from police and toward services that actually meet those needs, we'll be able to get to a place where we won't need to rob banks.

But, as games, they still exist as spin-offs, with a large time jump, even with the more direct ties to it. Neither series ever got to a point where they show or state robot a = robot b. After all those years I feel like someone would have just came out and said it, officially or unofficially.

But, conversely, a design continuity does not necessarily imply anything more than thematic continuity. Which the series has used several times since with specific stated disconnects.

But, you'd think that if X WAS the same robot and needed to relearn how to be a hero and fight to save the world they would have done more with it, like mentioning it in the instruction manual even if not in a text crawl in the game. As it WOULD be an interesting character beat worth bringing up.

Sure, but it would show the design continuity wasn't always a necessary or even intended part of the character and may exist only due to hypothetical external pressures.

On a meta level, wasn't the original design for X the one and ended up being used for Zero and they swapped it because they thought players would reject the large design change?

Yeah, he's designing a robot that he wants to be trusted to revolutionize and save the world. It makes sense to stick with design elements to draw comparisons to his previous work which did just that. Especially with him not being around to introduce him.

While I agree that would be an interesting beat for the character, since nothing seems to imply it textually, and nothing comes from it plot wise, it seems like purely fan conjecture. And the games aren't completely alien to having reveals like this, such as Zero in the Zero and ZX games.

But amnesia isn't a plot point that is ever brought up or discussed, nor is the idea that, at his core, he's the same robot. The simplest explanation that covers all facts is the most likely to be right. MegaMan is dead, long live X. (And later Volnutt, .EXE etc etc)

What about the rest of his tech? Defeating Dr. Wily wasn't the only reason he was famous. It might not even have been the biggest. And while they look SIMILAR, their attitudes are pretty different (beyond both being heroes). And the character arc is completely reset, with different motivations etc.

He's NOT his whole legacy. What about Roll? Or even Protoman? Didn't his other industrial/household style bots revolutionize the world? And X isn't even named Mega Man. X is a previously unseen type of robot and technology that inspired the creation of the mavericks/hunters of the future.

It COULD have been, sure. But none of the lore presented as such implies he's the same unit and, with the lack of any other units surviving, the simplest explanation would, to me, be that he's a completely different unit. Why would classic MegaMan need to be locked in a tube to learn morals?

That implies Dr. Light cares about MegaMan enough to keep him updated but does not care the same for his other creations, many of which he ALSO treats as his children. Also he DOESN'T do the same thing, the whole pitch is X can think for himself (or something like that) in a way classic can't.

I guess I thought that, like X, Zero was also unfinished by the time Wily died so he had to seal him away to finalize programming or whatever and he was just talking about his current/future project/plans at the end of Power Fighters
