I have a somewhat proprietary feeling towards The Onion, because it's where most of my Madison friends ended up, thirty-plus years ago.

the new guy... throws some of them work, while he uses the brand to promote his TikTok gf's run for Congress and platform unfunny bigots like a resurrected Kyanka.

the meeting ended with a much stronger hand for the OGs. they ended up with a nice first-look deal. eventually there would be an Onion movie, and it would be bad, but it would not be *that* movie.

that was Miramax. the guy... I was there as a ride-along, but yeah pretty sure it was Harvey.

my old friend Todd, who could also be incredibly magnetic, parried him point for point. I don't think the movie guy quite expected that. the entertainment press, when there was such a thing, had talked the Onion up a little like yokel idiot savants. (other way around.)

re the charisma debate

a while ago now, I sat in with the old Onion crew at a meeting with a movie guy in Tribeca. loud, middle-aged, passionate, stout. he drew the eye, visibly wielded the charm. he had an assistant get us all refreshments.

he tried to corral the writing staff into his vision. 1/

I think this is part of Silicon Valley's geek reverse snobbery; they feel compelled to champion insights drawn from what they believe mainstream culture considers low texts, e.g., Yudkowsky (a Thiel candidate for Antichrist) deriving religious inspiration from Vernor Vinge.

at the height of the Soylent hype, my wife found some packs of it left on a Park Slope stoop, and we sold it to a yuppie on the Internet -- a literal young urban professional.

Entire way of experiencing movies that zoomers will never remember, that people my age barely remember, where you watched something because it was on. Feels like there is an entire genre of movie that was meant to be seen in that format. You couldn’t make Swordfish (2001) today.
