that Western accent, pronouncing it "kyamp"

in three hundred years they'll be talking about going champing and the rest of us will try to keep a straight face

the Blank Check podcast's scheduling aura is kind of incredible. it got Marc Maron for today's episode on A SERIOUS MAN, and tomorrow is the last episode of his own podcast.

there's a screenshot of their post from October 10, 11:50 PM floating around.

deleted now, 260 reposts, 159 quotes, 3.3K likes. a spectacularly non-Israeli food, and not accommodating to Jewish dietary laws.

I trust you’ll forgive that I don't repost it.

checking, Guderian's quote is cleaner. but you know what? fuck that guy.

man LaFleur is smarter about getting guys open than anyone but I am getting why Rodgers was so frustrated. there is something too filigreed about his play-calling, and it stifles us.

what did that Kraut say? don't piss on them, shit on them.

I have a somewhat proprietary feeling towards The Onion, because it's where most of my Madison friends ended up, thirty-plus years ago.

the new guy... throws some of them work, while he uses the brand to promote his TikTok gf's run for Congress and platform unfunny bigots like a resurrected Kyanka.

oh I see the *amazingly* anti-Semitic Twitter food meme has reached BlueSky because a lot of you are terrible people who need to be taught manners with a two by four, even if it won't change your wicked hearts.

I can't find the eggnog flavor anywhere, and that stuff was choice.

PS no it's not in Christine's book, though I hope she got the story.

he kept on pushing the SCREAM movies as a model, incidentally. so it was either him or Bob.

anyhow, that was when I first saw how charisma worked as a duelist's weapon, not as a single knockout punch.

happy belated birthday, Todd.

the meeting ended with a much stronger hand for the OGs. they ended up with a nice first-look deal. eventually there would be an Onion movie, and it would be bad, but it would not be *that* movie.

that was Miramax. the guy... I was there as a ride-along, but yeah pretty sure it was Harvey.

my old friend Todd, who could also be incredibly magnetic, parried him point for point. I don't think the movie guy quite expected that. the entertainment press, when there was such a thing, had talked the Onion up a little like yokel idiot savants. (other way around.)

re the charisma debate

a while ago now, I sat in with the old Onion crew at a meeting with a movie guy in Tribeca. loud, middle-aged, passionate, stout. he drew the eye, visibly wielded the charm. he had an assistant get us all refreshments.

he tried to corral the writing staff into his vision. 1/

(I'm going to appall British readers by mentioning this subculture also views Terry Pratchett as an early inspiration, because at the time in the States he was thought of as an atheist Piers Anthony.)

it's no FROM HELL.

I think this is part of Silicon Valley's geek reverse snobbery; they feel compelled to champion insights drawn from what they believe mainstream culture considers low texts, e.g., Yudkowsky (a Thiel candidate for Antichrist) deriving religious inspiration from Vernor Vinge.

at the height of the Soylent hype, my wife found some packs of it left on a Park Slope stoop, and we sold it to a yuppie on the Internet -- a literal young urban professional.

we made the transfer at Bloomingdale's, for some reason, like some intestinal drug deal.

think a lot about how the guy who invented soylent had blog posts that were CLEARLY eating disorder stuff about going into supermarkets and feeling waves of revulsion looking at fresh food
lowrhoufo.bsky.social
A huge part of current twitter is eating disorder content for racist guys

this might sound like court manners at Versailles, but the mike cut and transition were brutal in context. total disrespect, and Davenport *craves* respect.

wouldn't surprise me if the Second Lady will have to cancel appearances because of a black eye or something.
carloshasanax.bsky.social
oh. the tastemakers are beginning to decide that J. Davenport Vance is anyone's meat.

given the odds of his succession to the presidency in the next three years are not low, it's surprising in this risk-averse media environment.

a shift to a "repeated game" in game theory.

why so late tho?

STEPHANOPOULOS: I didn't insinuate anything. I asked you whether Tom Homan accepted $50k as was heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024. You did not answer the question. Thank you for your time.

VANCE: No, George, I sai--

STEPHANOPOULOS: We'll be right back

About a year ago I put down my marker and called it: one day, in my lifetime, we will look back on the social media economy as a weird counter cultural aberration and I will be very relieved.

An influencer asked to collab with a Scottsdale, AZ bakery and was told no thanks. Influencer then shows up, leaves a rude and condescending review, so the owner drops this video with receipts about how the include tried to “blackmail”. Wild.

Entire way of experiencing movies that zoomers will never remember, that people my age barely remember, where you watched something because it was on. Feels like there is an entire genre of movie that was meant to be seen in that format. You couldn’t make Swordfish (2001) today.

no one listens to "You Light Up My Life" anymore, or "Feelings".

I guess they still listen to Slim Whitman in Europe. which explains a lot.

-- no obvious AI cheating. stuff is going on behind the scenes that you can't see, not fake but streamlined. it might suck if you're next to a Tilly "war makes the state" subcontinent OTH.
