Except that in 2032 leftists with terminal Merc's Law brain will notice that we as a nation are not better off than we were in 2024, much less 2016, and somehow express this as "Democrats don't do anything"
This is the case all across the federal government. It will take decades just to get back to where we were before, the envy of the world with our scientific innovation wich drove our economy.
““The loss of talent is setting the agency back a decade plus,” said David Kessler, a former agency commissioner. “It is not going to be fixable in the short term.””

Extremely tired of turning on the news and spinning the roulette wheel of grown Republican people talking about children's genitals as a matter of course. This is obsessive and gross.

I've long thought it useful to think of laws not as "what do we want people not to do" but "what do we want to punish people for doing"
People treat the law as an abstract statement of principles. They are instead dictates enforced by violence. Without enforcement, a law is not a law.

He's still a murderer but good on defense counsel for getting the prosecution to withdraw these from evidence. Asserting your right to an attorney should mean something.

I just saw a supposedly positive review of #YNAB that called it "a tool for self-actualization" and I don't know if I want to give a tool for self-actualization access to my bank account
Is #YNAB any good? Is it good if you don't make it a Lifestyle? What will I find if I check it against the BITE model?

Douthat's language is very telling. Why should someone be rewarded for having a particular race or gender?
The collective delusion here is useful in that it has provoked conservatives to dispense with decades of bootstrap rhetoric and reveal what they would say if they thought black people were people, that is to say, if these things were happening to them

I feel like the sort of person who uses Firefox will have especially strong opinions on putting AI into things, and (though I admit I'm less certain about this part) the balance of that opinion will be negative
@mozilla.org I have been using Firefox for YEARS. Not sure what the new CEO is hoping to achieve by "AI everything now" but if the hope is to drive people like me off your browser, you will surely succeed.

horror at the abuse of children became a social norm *within my lifetime*. you can see this even in some crime writing from the 1970s and 80s where a suspect being a pedophile is treated like a pecularity rather than an aberration.

He's a Fisher King if he's anything. I think a lot of his animus towards immigration and tourism is driven by that plus germophobia: the idea of foreigners in the US (or his immediate vicinity) feels to him like the thought of "germs" in his body
This is brilliantly written, and it gets at the fundamental thing I completely don’t get about Trump. You could name the things he cares about but he doesn’t even seem to care about them, not really. He’s just free floating malice in an ill-fitting suit.
Virginia Heffernan wrote this shortly after the 2016 election and it still holds true

I've been saying "when he finally shits himself to death," is that wrong?
this is not correct. people talk about it this way because it's more fun. It makes everyone feel like they're in on a secret together. This is how language is used for social bonding. Please stop being contemptuous of how other people do things.

Out of touch, or trying to roll society back to the 1950s, which means no Internet?
So many lawmakers are completely out of touch with how the internet actually works.

We prepped a page with resources and FAQ’s on Section 230 and why tampering with it is a bad idea.

They would do well to read it. www.whatissection230.org

Stop breaking the law, assholes
Lots of people, for various reasons, don’t or can’t drive. And they manage to live their lives. If you commit repeat DWIs and driving on suspended or revoked licenses, you should have your privilege to operate a motor vehicle revoked. Yes even if it means you can’t drive to your job.

You and your relationship partner(s) are generally on the same side (and if not, *that's* the problem), even if you're at odds in the moment about some specific matter

(To be clear, this is about relationship & household issues)
Let's do a thread called "Things I have learned" that are PRACTICAL bits of advice you have picked up over your lifetime.

I'll start: Right turns are safer than Left turns. Use this to plan getting in, out, and around crowded parking lots, especially this time of year.

1. Lord loves a working man
2. Don't trust whitey
3. See a doctor and get rid of it

Serious answer: the first time you make a new-to-you recipe, stick as close to the recipe as written as sourcing (and health conditions) will allow

It's alao a specific instance of, & obvious focus for Feelings about, the move towards an *economy* that doesn't actually need a lot of people working without a concurrent move to a society that accepts and allows for not a lot of people working
I continue to have no sympathy left for whinging about how the public are rude about AI and feel threatened by it when the biggest players in the AI space have spent years very vocally and constantly *threatening the public*

It may be a mildly interesting observation that the things Dickens and his readers alike recognized as indicia of desperate poverty come across as comfort if not prosperity to us (it's not true, but possibly interesting)

"Bob Cratchit isn't poor" is not that
No, this is wrong, stop reposting this absurd and miscalculated meme.

It assumes Cratchit is working a 40 hour work week (he isn't) and that straight line inflation extrapolations over centuries are valid (they're not) and fails to understand both Victorian class and household finance.

But this is just one article in an ocean of hundreds each year. On and on.
Shocking twist, there is actually some debate about whether the testosterone dose was too high. Overall the kid seems to be doing better with it than without it.

Look man, I want to live in a society where even if you don’t hold virtue in your heart, society is constructed in such a way that pretending you’re virtuous is coterminous with getting ahead, and demonstrating that you lack it leaves you behind. That’s better than where we are.
we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.

There's a sort of reverse sunk cost fallacy here, if you take this at face value. Moving away from Calibri won't recover the costs of switching in the first place; it will increase costs overall
Marco Rubio ordered diplomats to return to using Times New Roman font in official communications, calling his predecessor's decision to adopt Calibri a “wasteful” diversity move
Rubio Stages Font Coup: Times New Roman Ousts Calibri
The secretary of state called it a "wasteful" diversity move, according to an internal department cable seen by Reuters.

I don't think this is wrong but I think in addition jargon, and academicization more generally, in any field is seen as taking a simple thing and weighing it down with unnecessary complexity for Reasons (usually money or to trick people)
So jargon in the humanities is taken to be unnecessary, stolen valor, hiding the simplicity at the heart of the endeavor

And therefore if the aforementioned physicist can't understand history, it's the fault of the historian *and* the historian is *morally* at fault
