I see the Indy is also going with asylum seekers being “banned” from doing something they were being forced to do unwillingly in the first place, so presumably this is how the Home Office‘s press release is framing its own admissions of incompetence and waste

The Home Office’s absurd taxi bill results entirely from its insistence on forcing people to move round the country without choice or notice, & to live on the breadline so they can’t afford public transport. That Mahmood didn’t know about it till the BBC told her shows how appallingly the HO is run.

Dismal framing. Every aspect of most asylum seekers’ lives is controlled & paid for by the Home Office. They can’t work, are told where to live & have no autonomy or dignity. So they aren’t *choosing* to use taxis & don’t need to be “banned” from doing so. The HO just needs to get its act in order.
Government to ban asylum seekers from using taxis
The ban is set to come in February and any exemptions will have to be signed off by the Home Office.

Forever Knight (a vampire who works as a night shift cop)
Wynonna Earp (descendant uses her magic gun to fight supernatural crime with the help of her extremely gay sister)
Orphan Black (clones abound)
Mary Kills People (it's okay, she's a doctor)
La Femme Nikita (it's okay, it's like the movie)
I think if Canada wants to have a strong cultural identity we need to go back to doing what we're best at, making the weirdest fucking TV shows you've ever seen

I liked HAMNET (sue me). It's less about grief, though grief is the impetus, and more about the importance of art. The identity of the artist is second almost which is a very smart choice for handling the elephant in the room

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Watched this movie the other night. It's great, and this review captures it beautifully. Has Ethan Hawke given the best movie performance (Blue Moon) and best TV series performance (The Lowdown) of the year? A strong case can be made.

We need to understand the 21st century as a window of atrocity. The right vastly expands what is permissible, and the centrists lock it in and legitimise it so that the right can expand the window ever further. I don’t see how any reasonable person can deny this is what has happened.

This is nauseating. As reported, about as clear cut a war crime as it's possible to imagine.
The commander overseeing the operation, Adm. Frank M. “Mitch” Bradley, told people on the conference call that the survivors were still legitimate targets because they could theoretically call other traffickers to retrieve them and their cargo. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order to kill all crew members in the Sept. 2 strike on a suspected drug boat. Navy SEALs fired a second missile.

I have heard of professional critics doing this, which is (to say the least) upsetting. Sneak out of homework all you want, but if you're getting paid to think about it you have a responsibility to engage with something properly
Just as horrifying: I polled my students a couple years ago and almost all of them admitted to watching the movies I assigned them at 2x the speed!
Oh my god. She's 1000% right. This makes so much sense.

The worst arguments I ever had on the bad place were when I said Tár was bullshit because where are the fictional movies from the perspective of male sexual predators. A lot of male film critics had a great time discussing my flaws, but career sabotage or not, I'm still right about this
