A ghostly white head with long hair and a circlet is trapped in a glass jar with a metal, spiky lid tied with chains. The head is screaming with its mouth open wide, while a purple ooze flows from it. The jar is on top of an altar of sorts with runic inscriptions on the steps leading to it. Behind it, a huge, dark creature with long extremities looms over the scene, with its hands surrounding the jar. A red-haired dwarf with an eye patch, a mohawk and a manica and a Huge, muscular, long-haired character at a bar share a table, some drinks while playing and/or gambling. The dwarf has just leapt onto the table holding a massive axe and threatening to severe his opponent's hand, while the other begs him not to. In the background, a lively crowd cheers and laughs while watching the scene. The focus of the illustration is massive cocoon-like formation made of gnarled branching shapes with a warm, eye-shaped light in the centre. In the foreground, a thick “branch” where a character is standing goes towards the background. The atmosphere is mostly blue and hazy, with some warm light particles floating around. A horned and almost entirely covered creature stands in the middle of the picture. Frayed layers flow around its body, kind of disintegrating as they move. A dark face with bright eyes is barely visible. Behind it, we see a stony and almost organic setting in mostly cool colours. In the bottom of the frame, we see a small character looking at the giant creature, standing on an organic-looking pathway.

Hi #PortfolioDay, I'm Alena, a freelance illustrator who loves painting things with character, capturing little story moments. Working mainly - but not only - in card/board games & book covers.

Take a look at what I do at www.ajinak.cz 🎨
A collage of digital paintings: A sneaky red dragon above a forest stream, examining a little garnet. Two trios of bookmark illustrations, one centering around scenes (viking/valkyrie/valhalla, dwarf and swords, innkeeper and his rat inside a tavern), the other around female characters (vampire ball, steampunk, dark fantasy and magic). A cat warlock with glowing dual-bladed sword in a dusk scene. Arthas as a puppet paladin held by a boy, with red rose petals swirling around. An albino murloc pirate strolling a sunny beach, grinning, holding a sabre and a bamboozled fish.

A great battle between the army of the Blades of Khorne and the Lumineth.
The Aelves seem to be in trouble in this furious assault by Chaos! The army of the Flesh Eater Courts breaches the Reclusians' fortress to free those they believe to be prisoners. The Orruk army defends its territory by attacking the Citizens of Sigmar with fury. The Idoneth army lands impetuously on the beach dominated by Chaos.

Nice one! Waiting on that response is always tough. Congratulations!

More inspiration: Mike Mignola
I’m always trying to learn from Mignola’s infernal gift with black and white. Panels, pages and spreads are all so cinematic. Big masses broken by an edge and hinted form instantly creates complex depth. All of my initial scene sketches try to emulate this master.

Every waking moment has been drawing or teaching lately. Here is some inspiration:
Recently acquired book—Noriyoshi Ohrai.
His brushwork can be so immediate when it needs to be. He has such a range from academic realism to this adventurous sketching with paint. To be this bold and decisive digitally

Congratulations! Your work is really going to bring those worlds to life with story and atmosphere.

the main body scales really have some great gem-like translucency. Flat-ish highlights with rich shadows and multicolored mid tones. All shifting color a bit between layers. It looks like lots of good lessons in edge and color contrast to get the effect. Brilliant!

I got the chance to do updated artwork of the Gem Dragons for the new book: Dungeons & Dragons The Book of Dragons. I worked waaay too hard on these, I'm extremely proud of them.

This is dragon 1 of 5
Amethyst dragon design sheet I did. I spent way too long working on that faux bestiary page layout, please appreciate it.

I think just drawing dragons can be tough. Doing 5 redesigns in that schedule, and cutting no corners on the details…just divine. You got guts. Great job getting through such a big challenge!

Next in the Gem Dragon illustrations I did for Dungeons & Dragons The Book of Dragons is my favorite. You may have noticed the somewhat controversial design feature but instead of cowardly ‘fixing’ it, I leaned all the way in.

This is dragon 2 of 5
Topaz dragon illustration design sheet I painted. I know the wings are going to take some adjusting to so bear these words in mind: it also has floating crystals; it’s a magic man.

Congratulations! It will be so exciting to see once it’s public. I hope you are able to get many more commissions in the future!

Today was supposed to be a drawing day, but it was a “check in-clarify-touch base-negotiate-define terms-reschedule-wait for response” kind of day.

Mondays amiright?

Wonderful control of those gem-like colors. The implied haze/atmosphere is adding lots of narrative and spatial depth. Really awesome.

Nice to meet you, Maxine! I’m glad you liked how the art and your card came together.

How we feel about our own art is such a tough one. Maybe it’s like when we hear a recording of our own voice.
I hope you continue to make art in whatever form and find surprises in what you make next!

Beautiful, and such a strong dramatic composition. Sounds weird but…I love those rich warm yellows! Congratulations on starting work with Magic!
