Kihachiro Kawamoto’s Briar-Rose (or The Sleeping Beauty) (1990) is a little unusual in its feminist retelling (turning the fairy tale into an illusory gauze over a sexual awakening), but gorgeously animated. Perfect blend of Kawamoto’s tender puppetry and the legacy of Czech’s dynamic stop motion.
