Good start to the day talking Conservatives and civil society thanks to @probonoecon.bsky.social. Stuart Andrew wants regular engagement with the third sector - suspect we want the same! #PBEevents

The basic problem with "ancestry" as the basis for identity is I literally wasn't alive then. I'm an Essex Boy, English, and British because it's literally all I've ever known

The explanation from @pjtheeconomist.bsky.social implies significant long-term benefits of working at 17/18. Anyone know a good Lit Review on this question?
NEW: The Education Maintenance Allowance, a weekly cash transfer to disadvantaged students aged 16-19, did not improve their long-run outcomes.

The EMA only provided around 40p of benefits to students for every £1 spent.

Housing, transport, health and education. Arguable the principal four sectors for any economy, all more expensive than the OECD average.

And if that turns you to drink, I've got even worse news ...
We mutter a lot about housing in the UK. BUT IT'S 44% MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE OECD AVERAGE.

@thenfer.bsky.social research from before Xmas - ChatGPT reduced lesson planning time by 31% with no noticeable reduction in quality

My biggest weakness? Buying festive products at 75% discount. Next year's Christmas crackers sorted, and I have enough chocolate to last until Easter (when I will then buy three months worth of chocolate the week after Easter)

Quite the call. Is this in the interests of the young people the @childrenssociety.bsky.social exists to serve?
BREAKING: The Children’s Society said it has “respectfully decided not to accept” a Christmas donation from outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

It said that doing so “would not be consistent with the principles and values that underpin our work”

One of the main things I notice about employment rights is that many of the working-class folk I know were neither granted or aware of those rights, & many of the middle class folk I know assumed that rights were universally known & granted.

I can sort of understand rubbernecking at a semi serious accident being your immediate reaction - but why does 2% of the population have a real problem with being politely encouraged to give an injured person some privacy?

Very good thread.

I'd note this focuses primarily on *output* targets for public services (waiting times, exam results etc.]

Of course what we (politicians, public) are really interested in are *outcomes* [health of the population/ourselves, education quality, incomes]

But.. [1/2]
On Thursday, the govt will publish its Plan for Change. This will include key 'milestones' for each of the govt's five missions. Targets such as these have been used extensively by previous govts trying to improve public service performance. But how effective are targets?

A short🧵on the evidence:

Today, the govt has confirmed National Funding Formula allocations for schools in England

An extra £2.3bn was announced in the Autumn Budget. About £1bn is going on high needs. The rest is going on mainstream schools, but the funding rises probably won't cover schools expected costs next year 🧵

All charities need to get their money from somewhere. That money comes with trade-offs. The type of money you raise does not just shape your fundraising, it shapes your whole organisation. …
