Constant reader, always looking for my next great read. Science fiction fan for 50+ years, but I read many genres and love to talk about books. Also unreasonably obsessed with birds. 🌲Located in green, damp, mossy Seattle (upper-left-corner USA)

👍 I hope the narrator is good, and I hope you enjoy it!

I appreciate the recs! There's been no consistency in which books of the series are released here in the US, or when. Some show up in ebook but not paper, with some it's the other way around, and some never get here at all. Makes it very hard to keep track.

I hadn’t realized the Tales of the Weird series included any novels! (And apparently there are just a couple.) This looks great—I'm so glad you posted about it!

I LOVED Extremophile by Ian Green because it's about clever, nice kids* in a hard world, trying to learn how to do hard things while staying true to themselves. There's no padding, the pace is exhilarating, and the ending made me cry from sheer hope and beauty.

*They're adults, but I'm old, okay?

I've decided that whilst critical success is lovely, I'd like to sell some books.

If you liked EXTREMOPHILE, recommend it to a pal! (If your pal is fucking COOL and not a narc)

Eco-terrorism biohacking body horror, smart shit with dumb characters. Your new favourite book

'A visceral, doesn't-give-a-damn biopunk thriller that treats the "punk" part of that subgenre not as mere window-dressing but as an antifascist shriek... vital and urgent SF that reaches places realist writing never could' ― @interzone.press

If you like cool shit get this 🕶️

Oh I like this - Reading by Hugh Walpole

READING
The great moment of the day is come,
one
stands watching the last sweep of violet into dun above the line of the hill. Now the only sound in all the world is the running stream; you turn down the path, open the door,
find
light of theFire to ye lan, light it
and then turn.
The books crowd in upon
you,
they
are pressing,
urgent,
upon
every side.
Is you stand by one of the
bookcases
there is a glorious instant of
indecision
that you
would
prolong
if
nature would
but allow
then
the
book,
almost
without
1t Aeliberate
consciousness,
is in
your hand,
your
chair is drawn
to the blaze, and with a
sigh of content you are off and away.

"The greatest tales are told over and over, in many ways, through centuries. Fantasy changes with the changing times, and yet it is still the oldest kind of tale in the world, for it began once upon a time, and we haven't heard the end of it yet."

A collection of interlinked ghost stories recounted by the security guard of an unusual labyrinthine research facility, THE MIDNIGHT TIMETABLE is the playful, chilling, unsettling, and irresistibly weird concoction, out now from Bora Chung (author of cult favourite Cursed Bunny!)

Zoom out into space. Abouard a spaceship, two aliens watch the scientists on a screen.

#MythologyMonday today is all about favourite mythology-themed books, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to share some of my favourite books about #JapaneseFolklore and #yokai. Here's a section of my bookshelf to get started. I'll share my recommendations in separate posts.

A riddle for @theguardian.com books page.
p.s. My new book 'Physics for Cats' is out this week in bookshops and online. Details at www.tomgauld.com
Title: One door leads to freedom, the others to certain death. You may ask one question.

Image: Three guards with shields and speard stand in front of three doors. One guard sits at a folding table working at a typewriter, his shield and spear leaning against the wall.

Caption: One guard always tells the truth, one always tells lies, and the third always tells an entrancing story that blends reportage with imagination in an attempt to reach a deeper authenticity by moving beyond the narrow categories of fact and fiction.

Good morning! I'm reading in Spanish this week: Capitán Riley (Captain Riley) by Fernando Gamboa, a lively WWII adventure novel full of smugglers and shipwrecks and Nazis (oh my!). I'm one-third through and (sadly) no Nazis have actually been punched yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.🥊🍿

A cartoon from my new book, 'Physics for Cats'. Out next week: www.tomgauld.com
A scientist stands in front of an enormous contraption
"I created this device to test my theory that our entire reality is a simulation, but the readings I'm
getting suggest something much worse"

 "What?" Asks a second scientist.
"We're living in a cartoon!" Says the first.
"Does it at least have a good punchline?" says the second.
The fiorst scientist carefully looks over the data, then eventually replies "Nope"

Me, I can't argue in favor of reading Three Stations because I felt it really fell apart in the second half. That was when Smith began having real difficulty with typing.😢 Tatiana is good, though—he wrote it by dictation! You don't mention Wolves Eat Dogs—don't skip that one, it's great!

Oops. Girkin has always been an astute and realistic observer of the war, but it increasingly appears he's lost access to non-Russian information sources…and, I guess, is desperately trying to deduce reality from Russian propaganda. Which is impossible, of course.

👋Oh well, it's been fun, Igor.
